Flexible Nationalisms
Anthony D. Smith, in one of his earlier, less debated, works – Nationalism in the 20th Century (1979) – examines phases of nationalism in the modern era, suggesting that nationalism has taken various forms before and during the 20th century. He argues that nationalism’s adaptability is at the core of its persistence, adapting to changing situations such as fascism and communism. As a result of this adaptability, nationalism still flourishes today…
National Identity Hollowed-Out
This article examines the transformation of Irish national identity 100 years after independence, focusing on the phenomenon described as the “hollowing out” of national identity. While symbolic markers such as the Irish language and Catholicism remain central to the concept of Irishness, their associated practices have significantly declined. Similarly, the civic dimensions of national identity, including citizenship and respect for political in…
Speaking Irish and belonging among Irish-speakers of diverse ethnicity and nationality in Ireland
This is a pilot study on the relationship between speaking Irish and belonging, with a focus on Irish-speakers of diverse ethnicities and/or nationalities in Ireland. The research includes twelve respondents with diverse backgrounds in terms of nationality and/or ethnicity. We examine whether the language gives them a sense of belonging to Ireland, but also if they experience any exclusion on the basis that it does not ‘belong’ to them. Our resea…
Labhairt na Gaeilge agus muintearas in Éirinn, i measc Gaeilgeoirí a bhfuil eitneachas agus náisiúntachtaí éagsúla acu
Réamhfhocal Sa staidéar píolótach seo rinneamar iniúchadh ar an gceangal atá ann idir labhairt na Gaeilge agus muintearas, ag díriú go sonrach ar chainteoirí Gaeilge ó chúlraí eitneacha agus/nó náisiúnta éagsúla i bPoblacht na hÉireann. Ghlac daoine, a raibh náisiúntachtaí agus eitneachtaí éagsúla acu, rannpáirt sa staidéar. Trí thaighde cáilíochtúil (ag amharc trí lionsa an náisiúnachais) rinneamar imscrúdú ar an gceist an dtugann labhairt na Ga…

Re-imagining the nation-state
In this article the positive lessons from the coronavirus pandemic are examined, focusing on the intensive activities of solidarity at the local, national, and transnational levels, the increase in scientific cooperation, the implementation of assistance policies by states, and the various endeavors of NGOs, religious communities, private organizations, wealthy and less wealthy donors, and charities to support individuals and groups affected by i…

Reflexive Green Nationalism (RGN)
What can theories of nationalism and the nation-state tell us about climate change? Much of the available literature, including works by prominent thinkers Ulrich Beck and Bruno Latour, identify it as a collective global challenge rather than a local and national one. But is it really so? This article develops an original theoretical framework integrating the theory of "reflexive modernity", theories of nationalism, and case studies of green nati…
Nationalism and environmentalism
Although nationalism has been identified as the dominant ideology of the modern era, and environmentalism is the 21st century rising star, few studies address the relationship between them. The consensus seems to be that they are hardly compatible, considering that nationalism is a boundary‐building phenomenon while environmentalism advocates for the safeguarding of the environment beyond national borders. Drawing on evidence from fieldwork in th…
Introduction to a visual sociology of smaller nations in Europe
In the introduction to this special issue there is an exploration of how a visual sociological perspective can be used both to visually represent and to better understand some of the salient features of smaller nations in contemporary Europe. In the first section there is a focus on the increasing theoretical and empirical emphasis on the visual in everyday life and the renewed social scientific interest in the nation. Following that there is an …
Fortress Europe as Empire and Ireland’s National Diaspora Centre
This article develops a concept of core–periphery schema to investigate how the underlying cultural structures of social groups and insider–outsider relations are represented visually. We apply both the concept of core–periphery schemas as well as the concept of smaller states to case studies of existing diagrammatic visual representations in academic and policy publications. The specific cases we examine are Geddes’ (2000) and Gravier’s (2015) c…
Research in a Time of Financial Constraints
In Ireland funding for research, especially in the social sciences, has declined considerably. Consequently some data collection methods, particularly faceto-face interviews, have become financially impractical. Postal surveys offer a less expensive alternative but the use of postal methods is hampered in Ireland by restrictions on the use of the electoral register – the only national database which matches citizens’ names and addresses. The elec…
Náisiúnachas Leamh i ‘Bpobal Inbhuanaithe’ in Aice le Teorainn na Fraince Agus na Gearmáine
Níl an tírghrá go hiomlán difriúil leis an náisiúnachas, is cineál náisiúnachais é. D'fhéadfá a rá gur cineál náisiúnachas fuar nó leamh (‘banal’) é an tírghrá. Sa Ghearmáin, in áiteanna agus ar ócáidí a mbeifí ag súil le siombailí an náisiúin a bheith ann go leamh, níl siad ann ar chor ar bith, nó tá siad íoslaghdaithe d'aon turas. Ach fós cuirtear náisiúin i láthair leis an bhfhianaise is fearr dá bhfuil ar fáil i na rudaí a mó a mbíonn bród ar…

Is there an educational advantage to speaking Irish? An investigation of the relationship between education and ability to speak Irish
In this article new findings are outlined that show a relationship between ability to speak Irish and level of education. The authors' statistical analysis of International Social Survey Programme data from a survey in 2003 on national identity reveals that Irish speakers have been more likely than non Irish speakers to attend university (or equivalent). This likelihood is strongest amongst people who were born in the 1950s and 1960s, and more pa…
Irish-language broadcasting
Irish-language broadcasting is discussed. The history of Irish-language broadcasting is outlined from the 1920s to the present. Irish-language broadcasting since the 1960s is placed in the context of two competing ideologies - a traditional and a modern ideology. These ideologies are the foundations on which contradictory demands placed on TG4 are built. The conflict between minority rights and market forces are discussed in relation to TG4. It i…
TG4, Féiniúlacht Agus Saorántacht
Pléitear stair an chraolacháin Ghaeilge thar na cúig bliana is seachtó ó thosaigh an stáisiún raidió 2RN, suas go dtí an lá atá inniu ann agus teacht TG4. Cuirtear an argóint chun cinn go bhfuil coimhlint ann idir dhá idé-eolaíocht – bíonn daoine ag súil go mbeidh TG4 in ann freastal ar an mhionlach a labhrann Gaeilge agus teacht ar airgead ó fhógraíocht a bhíonn ag brath ar lucht féachana níos mó ná mar atá ar fáil i measc lucht labhartha na Gae…
Naked peoples
I am writing about the law of this country now called Australia. Kaldowinyeri [the creation time or the dreamtime], in the beginning, the ancestors come to know law. The law is naked like the land and its people, it is raw. Raw law is unlike the colonial legal system which comprises of layer upon layer of rules and regulations. The law is raw. Law is birthed by the creation. And like the birthing of the people, the law was born naked. All law was…
The Irish Language and Television
This paper examines the new Irish language television channel, Teilifis na Gaeilge. The politico-ideological and economic environments are assessed as factors influencing the formulation of the policies in which Irish language television is and has been placed. It is argued that the aims of the restoration and preservation of Irish, which are related to the building of the nation, are ideologically unacceptable in the current environment and that…
