Bereaved mothers’ media coverage and public support for harm reduction in Canada
Background Mothers whose child’s death is related to substance use have emerged as prominent and outspoken critics of Canadian drug policy in the news media. We examined the extent to which, and who among, the general public has seen or heard mothers bereaved by substance use in the media; predicted factors associated with exposure to such media; and explored associations with public acceptance of harm reduction. Methods We analyzed data from a 20…

Health Systems Responsiveness in Addressing Indigenous Residents' Health and Mental Health Needs Following the 2016 Horse River Wildfire in Northern Alberta, Canada
Following the 2016 Horse River Wildfire in northern Alberta, the provincial health authority, the ministry of health, non-profit and charitable organizations, and regional community-based service agencies mobilized to address the growing health and mental health concerns among Indigenous residents and communities through the provision of services and supports. Among the communities and residents that experienced significant devastation and loss w…
Interest in online supports and brief self-help interventions among cannabis using Canadian university students
Only a fraction of problematic cannabis users ever seek treatment from specialty addiction services. This gap could be reduced via online brief interventions and self-help resources; however, it is not clear whether cannabis users would be interested in accessing those tools. We examined whether cannabis use, motives for using cannabis, and protective behavioral strategies predicted hypothetical interest in accessing online self-help resources. W…
Treating latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) with isoniazid and rifapentine (3HP) in an inner-city population with psychosocial barriers to treatment adherence
In Canada, preventive therapy for latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) has required multiple doses of medication over an extended period of time. Such regimens are associated with poor adherence and completion rates. A shortened treatment regimen of once weekly isoniazid plus rifapentine for 3 months (3HP), is now available, and holds promise in populations facing challenges to treatment adherence. Although many factors impact treatment adherence…

Racial discrimination, post-traumatic stress and prescription drug problems among Aboriginal Canadians
Substance-related and behavioural addiction problems
Objectives: To describe absolute and relative prevalence of 10 self-attributed substance-related and behavioural addiction problems among Canadian adults, to describe perceived prevalence of these problems in the general population, and to examine whether estimates varied by survey mode. Methods: Sample 1 included 4000 adults recruited from an online research panel; Sample 2 included 2000 randomly selected adults who completed a computer-assisted…
Poorer Physical Health-related Quality of Life Among Aboriginals and Injection Drug Users Treated With Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy
Illicit and prescription drug problems among urban Aboriginal adults in Canada
Patient-Provider Rapport in the Health Care of People Who Inject Drugs
Little research has described determinants and consequences of patient-provider rapport among people who inject drugs (PWIDs). This mixed-method study (a) qualitatively described facilitators, barriers, and consequences to rapport development between PWIDs and their health care providers and (b) quantitatively tested the hypothesis that quality of rapport is associated with positive patterns of service use. Two exploratory focus groups with PWIDs…
All-cause and HIV-related Mortality Rates Among HIV-infected Patients After Initiating Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy
Barriers to accessing highly active antiretroviral therapy by HIV‐positive women attending an antenatal clinic in a regional hospital in western Uganda
BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to describe barriers to accessing and accepting highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) by HIV-positive mothers in the Ugandan Kabarole District's Programme for the Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission-Plus (PMTCT-Plus). METHODS: Our study was a qualitative descriptive exploratory study using thematic analysis. Individual in-depth interviews (n = 45) were conducted with randomly selected HIV-positi…

The Experience of Developing a Package of Instruments to Measure the Critical Characteristics of Community Support Programs for People with a Severe Mental Illness
A major challenge for program evaluators is to develop and use measures of program implementation that are both comprehensive and generalizable across programs. The goal is to understand how measures of program characteristics are related to outcomes and, ultimately, to improve program effectiveness. In this brief report, we describe our experience in developing a package of instruments to measure critical characteristics of community support pro…
Social control and coercion in addiction treatment
Social pressures are often an integral part of the process of seeking addiction treatment. However, scientists have not developed conclusive evidence on the processes, benefits and limitations of using legal, formal and informal social control tactics to inform policy makers, service providers and the public. This paper characterizes barriers to a robust interdisciplinary analysis of social control and coercion in addiction treatment and provides…

The role of absorption in experiential involvement
The authors examined correlates of trait absorption to understand when and how pronounced engagement with attentional objects occurs. In Study 1 (N = 321), absorption and openness to experience were positively correlated (r =.64), and these involvement constructs were differentiated from Eysenck's Big 3 (Extraversion, Neuroticism, and Psychoticism; H. J. Eysenck & M. W. Eysenck, 1985). In Study 2 (N = 68), absorption was positively correlated wit…

More than consumption
In a household survey, 882 respondents provided information on (1) weekly alcohol consumption, (2) perceptions of job security, pressures exerted by co-workers and friends to use alcohol and other drugs, social isolation on the job, and (3) alcohol-related problems. At a bivariate level, consumption was positively related to alcohol problems (r = .45, p
A Prospective Study of Quit Attempts from Alcohol Problems in a Community Sample
A prospective natural history study was conducted of problem drinkers who were thinking about quitting or reducing their alcohol consumption. Two primary constructs, cognitive appraisals and life events, were measured in a mailed-out baseline survey. A two month follow-up survey identified those who had made reductions in drinking. Regression analyses revealed some support for a cognitive appraisal explanation of change. Respondents who identifie…
