A Cross-Cultural Cosmographic Interpretation of Some Korean Geomancy Maps
This paper provides a cosmographic interpretation for examples of some old Korean geomancy maps from Cheju Island. While it would be easy to dismiss geomancy maps from an outsider's cultural perspective as inscrutable, occult, Oriental oddities, or as examples of naive depictions of 'reality,' a cosmographic interpretation yields something more profound. The Architecture of Ideology
Cheju Island, Korea's historic island of exile, with a harsh natural environment, early developed a negative image as human habitat. The author challenges this perception and shows how Neo-Confucian state ideology during the Yi dynasty (A.D. 1392-1910) created and conserved the island as a viable habitat by using feng-shui--a powerful medieval science of surveying--to shape the island's built environment and quality of life. A Study of the Interactions of Human, Pig, and the Human Pork Tapeworm
The role of pigsty-privies on Cheju Island, South Korea, in the transmission of helminth parasites from pig to man is discussed with particular reference to Taenia solium. It appears that pigsty-privies reduce the incidence of intestinal nematode infections in the human population but not that of T. solium. It is suggested, however, that the prevalence of the more pathogenic qaberrantq infection (with cysticerci) is reduced, and the efficacy of t…
