Perfectionism, Goal Orientation, and Emerging Adults’ Identity Processing Styles
The current study explored the direct and interactive contributions of multidimensional measures of perfectionism and goal orientation in predicting patterns of identity-related self-processing for pre-COVID-19 and during-COVID-19 samples of traditional age (18–22 year old) emerging adult college students ( N = 722). Regression models controlled for age, binary gender, and race, then tested the unique conditional effects and interactions between …
Profiling Authentic Self-Development: Associations With Basic Need Satisfaction in Emerging Adulthood
Research on dispositional authenticity has accelerated in recent years. Using the Authenticity Scale and drawing upon Self-Determination Theory, we conducted a Latent Profile Analysis to determine whether two or more distinct classes of authentic self-development were identifiable across separate samples (Ns = 344 and 378) of emerging adults (18–22 year olds). We also tested whether multidimensional perfectionism and attachment insecurity were co…
Mental Health, Self-Stigma, and Help-Seeking Intentions Among Emerging Adults: An Attachment Perspective
Many college students experience common mental health concerns, such as anxiety and depression, but do not seek psychological help. The present study proposed an attachment theory–driven model interrelating adult attachment, mental health concerns, and self-stigma in predicting intentions to seek counseling with a college student sample ( N = 1,682). Structural equation modeling revealed that attachment anxiety, but not attachment avoidance, dire…
Probing the relationship between selfobject needs and adult attachment orientations
Both Kohut’s self-psychology (Kohut, H. 1971. The analysis of the self. New York, NY: International Universities Press. 1984. How does psychoanalysis cure? Chicago, IL: University of Chicago Press) and Bowlby’s (Bowlby, J. 1988. A secure base: Parent-child attachments and healthy human development. New York, NY: Basic Books) attachment theory propose that when basic human emotional needs for affirmation, belongingness, and security are inadequate…
Authenticity, Social Context, and Well-Being in the United States, England, and Russia: A Three Country Comparative Analysis
The study investigated interrelationships among trait authenticity, context-specific authenticity, and well-being in three samples drawn from England, the United States, and Russia. Six hundred and twenty-eight adults participated: 196 from the United States, 240 from England, and 192 from Russia. The overall sample consisted of 151 men and 477 women with a mean age of 27 years (range = 18 to 56). Authenticity was rated both as a general trait an…
A Latent Class Analysis of Dyadic Perfectionism in a College Sample
A latent class analysis of dyadic perfectionism scores within a college sample (N = 369) identified four classes of participants. Controlling for gender and current dating status, class membership was associated with significant differences on several measures of relationship attitudes. Gender and class membership also significantly interacted in predicting gender role stress scores. Implications of the findings for the counseling of relationally…
Authoritarian and Homophobic Attitudes: Gender and Adult Attachment Style Differences
This study explored the relations of gender and adult attachment styles to college students' scores on several measures of authoritarian attitudes (e.g., right-wing authoritarianism, ethnocentrism, homophobia, and religious fundamentalism). A multivariate analysis of authoritarian attitudes yielded significant main and interaction effects involving students' gender and their (categorical) attachment style scores. Relative to women, men reported h…

Factor Structure, Stability, and Predictive Validity of College Students’ Relationship Self-Efficacy Beliefs
This study explored the underlying structure, stability, and predictive validity of college students scores on a measure of relationship maintenance self-efficacy beliefs. Three identified efficacy-related factors were found to be stable; related in expected directions with gender, commitment status, and adult attachment orientations: and uniquely predictive of subsequent relationship satisfaction
Preliminary development and validation of a measure of relationship authenticity.
The authors describe the preliminary development and validation of the Authenticity in Relationships Scale. An initial pool of 37 items addressing various elements of the proposed definition of “relationship authenticity ” was administered to 2 independent samples of undergraduates (N 487) who acknowl-edged being in a current romantic relationship. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses revealed that 2 interpretable factors (Unacceptability…
Further Validation of a Measure of Parent-Adult Attachment Style
Two studies using the Parent—Adult Attachment Style Questionnaire (P—AASQ) are described. In both, college students were classified into 1 of 3 parent—adult attachment style groups, and their scores on a common set of adjustment measures were examined. Results provide further support for the reliability and concurrent and predictive validity of scores from the P—AASQ
Dynamic processes underlying adult attachment organization: Toward an attachment theoretical perspective on the healthy and effective self.
Contemporary attachment theory is inspiring a burgeoning literature on adult attachment. This literature offers counseling psychology a compelling framework for understanding the healthy and effective self. In this article, the authors review studies probing the cognitive processes, affect self-regulatory dynamics. and relationship behaviors associated with secure (primary) and insecure (secondary) adult attachment strategies. They then offer a p…
Attachment styles, shame, guilt, and collaborative problem‐solving orientations
The present study explored relations among adult attachment styles, shame‐ and guilt‐proneness, and several measures of relationship problem‐solving attitudes and behaviors. Participants were 142 undergraduates (32 males, 110 females) who completed both categorical and continuous measures of adult attachment, as well as self‐report measures of the other constructs under investigation. Most participants (93%) were currently involved in either excl…
Student-Professor Relationship Styles, Childhood Attachment Bonds and Current Academic Orientations
Within the past decade, attachment theory has been productively extended into the domains of close adult relationships. Indeed, a key theoretical construct attachment security has been shown to predict a variety of important relationship out comes, including perceived trust, affect self-regulation, and overall dyadic adjustment. More recently, attachment theory has guided research into non-intimate relationships, again with supportive results. In…
Contemporary Attachment Theory: An Introduction with Implications for Counseling Psychology
Although originating from the study of infant development, attachment theory has recently been extended into domains of adult adjustment, and this emergent literature underscores the theory's promise as an integrative framework for inquiry and practice in counseling psychology. This article briefly reviews the theory's conceptual foundations and key empirical findings and traces important conceptual and methodological advances. Results of contemp…

Brief Therapy: A Model for Early Counselor Training
Early counselor training has traditionally stressed acquisition of basic listening skills while underemphasizing instruction in specific problem-solving competencies. This bias may be partly responsible for such frequently observed supervision issues as counselor anxiety, inefficient counselor management of interview time, inadequate problem clarification, and premature intervention. Models for conducting brief, problem-focused counseling seem we…
