Geomorphic changes and socio-environmental impacts of recent sand mining in the Sakarya River, NW Turkey
Analysis of multi-temporal satellite images from 1980 to 2019, complemented by geomorphic mapping and field study, indicate that "loose sand" extraction of Sakarya River deposits from the Adapazarı Plain of NW Turkey significantly intensified during the last decade, and mining operations have caused complete and irreversible alteration of floodplain habitat in a total area amounting to ~970 hectares. Our reconstructions estimate the total amount …
Crust occurrence on a Galatian rock‐cut dwelling in central Anatolia, Turkey
Mahkemağcin Underground City (MUC) is a four‐floored rock‐cut dwelling complex carved into ignimbrite tuffs of the Early‐Middle Miocene age in central Anatolia. The whole interior of the complex is covered by a 1–5 cm thick alteration crust that is not detected in any cave or outcrop in the region. This crust is investigated using microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X‐ray diffraction and X‐ray fluorescence analyses, and the results are disc…
Fluvial response to rising levels of the Black Sea and to climate changes during the Holocene
The Sakarya River is among the largest fluvial systems of the southern Black Sea basin, draining most of NW Anatolia. The river crosses the high relief of the Pontide mountain range through successive narrow gorges and strike-slip basins formed by the North Anatolian Fault (NAF) System. We have investigated this fluvial record along the course of the main river channel at its lower reaches. The study site is located south of the Adapazarı Basin, …
Identification and characterization of two new obsidian sub-sources in the Nemrut volcano (Eastern Anatolia, Turkey)
Paleolithic occupations of the Göllü Dağ, Central Anatolia, Turkey
Systematic archaeological surface reconnaissance of the Göllü Dağ volcanic complex from 2007 to 2012 documented more than 230 findspots with Paleolithic artifacts, ranging from isolated finds to extensive and dense scatters of artifacts. Most of the activities represented relate to exploitation of the rich obsidian resources in the region. Paleolithic artifacts are attributed mainly to the Middle Paleolithic based on the presence of Levallois tec…
