  • Vegetation history during the last 28,000 years in Tamba Highland, Kyoto, Japan based on multi-analyses of sediment from the Jaga-ike mire

Open Access•Hikaru Takahara, Tomoko Manabe et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Environments and Humans•2026

Sediment cores obtained from the Jaga-ike mire, located in the inland mountainous area of the Kinki region in western Japan, date back to 28,000 cal BP. The vegetation history around the Jaga-ike mire since the Last Glacial period was reconstructed using multiproxy analyses (pollen, macrofossils, and charcoal). From 28,000 to 20,000 cal BP, forests were dominated by pinaceous conifers such as Abies, Tsuga, Picea , and Pinus as well as Betula tree…

  • Testing the Reveals-based vegetation reconstruction around Lake Biwa, western Japan, using absolute pollen productivity estimates derived from the flower counting method

    Open Access•Ryoma Hayashi, Naoko Sasaki et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2025•Referências: 59

Lake Biwa pollen records and the REVEALS model provide new insight into the past dynamic of Japanese vegetation. Instead of relying solely on pollen percentages, we employed the REVEALS model with absolute pollen productivity estimates (aPPEs) derived from flower counting approaches. The locally-obtained aPPEs, combined with a Lagrangian stochastic dispersal model (LSM), yielded results that were dramatically closer to the modern vegetation surve…

  • Beppu Bay, Japan, as a candidate Global boundary Stratotype Section and Point for the Anthropocene series

    Open Access•Michinobu Kuwae, B Finney et al.•ARTICLE•The Anthropocene Review•2023•Citada por: 4•Referências: 29

For assessment of the potential of the Beppu Bay sediments as a Global boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) candidate for the Anthropocene, we have integrated datasets of 99 proxies. The datasets for the sequences date back 100 years for most proxy records and 1300 years for several records. The cumulative number of occurrences of the anthropogenic fingerprint reveal unprecedented increases above the base of the 1953 flood layer at 64.6 c…

  • The Neotoma Paleoecology Database, a multiproxy, international, community-curated data resource

    Open Access•John W Williams, Eric C Grimm et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2018

The Neotoma Paleoecology Database is a community-curated data resource that supports interdisciplinary global change research by enabling broad-scale studies of taxon and community diversity, distributions, and dynamics during the large environmental changes of the past. By consolidating many kinds of data into a common repository, Neotoma lowers costs of paleodata management, makes paleoecological data openly available, and offers a high-quality…

  • Millennial-scale vegetation changes during the last 40,000 yr based on a pollen record from Lake Biwa, Japan

Open Access•Ryoma Hayashi, Hikaru Takahara et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2010

A high-resolution pollen record covering the last 40,000 yr (BIW95-4) from Lake Biwa, western Japan, shows regional vegetation responses to millennial-scale climate changes. From 40 to 30 ka, Cryptomeria japonica was dominant around the lake among pinaceous conifers and deciduous broad-leaved trees. During this period, fluctuations of C. japonica are correlated with Dansgaard–Oeschger (D–O) cycles recognized from the anhysteretic remanent magneti…

  • Radiocarbon and Stable Carbon Isotope Ratio Data from a 4.7-Mlong Sediment Core of Lake Baikal (Southern Siberia, Russia)

Open Access•Fumiko Watanabe Nara, Takahiro Watanabe et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2010

A sediment core (VER99G12; core length, 4.66 m) was taken from the Buguldeika Saddle of Lake Baikal in 1999. Radiocarbon measurements of total organic carbon (TOC) and pollen concentrate fractions from the VER99G12 core were performed by a Tandetron accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) system (Model-4130, HVEE) at Nagoya University. The AMS 14 C ages showed that the VER99G12 core spans the past ∼30 cal ka BP (from the MIS 3 to present), and the av…

    Open Access•Sergey K Krivonogov, Hikaru Takahara et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2004•Citada por: 3•Referências: 1

New radiocarbon dates obtained from Late Pleistocene and Holocene deposits of the southern, eastern, and northern shores of Lake Baikal in 1995–2001 are presented, and the most important results of paleoenvironmental studies based on C data are discussed. The following paleogeographic events were verified with the help of C dating: 1) first Late Pleistocene glaciation (Early Zyryan); 2) Middle Zyryan interstadial; 3) loess formation during the La…
