  • Playing Jazz in Socialist Vietnam

    Alexander M Cannon•ARTICLE•The Journal of Asian Studies•2023

The artistry of Vietnamese jazz has never received thorough documentation, so Playing Jazz in Socialist Vietnam is a very welcome addition to music scholarship. The book features conversations held from 2009 to 2017 “over whiskeys and smokes” (xiii) between academic Stan BH Tan-Tangbau and self-taught jazz musician Quyền Văn Minh. Tan-Tangbau recorded, transcribed, and translated these conversations and then organized them into a narrative about …

  • Awakening the Soul with the Left Hand

    Alexander M Cannon•ARTICLE•Ethnomusicology•2021•References: 36

Following the traumas of the twentieth century, inner experiences of Vietnamese in diaspora became difficult to articulate. To overcome this, musicians have focused on the body as the primary mediator of the soul. They use the left hand in particular to rebuild the soul and make sense of the fractur…

  • From Nameless to Nomenclature

    Alexander M Cannon•ARTICLE•Asian Music•2016

Descriptions of musical genre often feature categories of instruments, melodies, and other common performance practices. Using the example of southern Vietnamese đờn ca tài tử (music of talented amateurs or music for diversion), this article proposes that musicians define genre instead as the negotiation of a series of “thematic loops” or sets of opposing concepts upon which musicians focus during performance. Ethnographic research in H ồ Chí Min…

    Alexander M Cannon•ARTICLE•Ethnomusicology•2013•Cited by: 1•References: 10

  • Virtually Audible in Diaspora

    Alexander M Cannon•ARTICLE•Journal of Vietnamese Studies•2012•Cited by: 1

This essay explores the performance and pedagogical practices of Master Musician [Nhạc Sư] Nguyễn Vĩnh Bảo, a musician of nhạc tài tử Nam bộ [music of talented amateurs] who lives and works in Hồ Chí Minh City, but whose students reside primarily in diaspora. By critically engaging with the concept of “trans-nation”—a term coined by Yan Haiping—and invoking theories of transnational competence, the essay examines the processes by which Nhạc Sư Ng…
