  • Beppu Bay, Japan, as a candidate Global boundary Stratotype Section and Point for the Anthropocene series

    Open Access•Michinobu Kuwae, B Finney et al.•ARTICLE•The Anthropocene Review•2023•Cited by: 4•References: 29

For assessment of the potential of the Beppu Bay sediments as a Global boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) candidate for the Anthropocene, we have integrated datasets of 99 proxies. The datasets for the sequences date back 100 years for most proxy records and 1300 years for several records. The cumulative number of occurrences of the anthropogenic fingerprint reveal unprecedented increases above the base of the 1953 flood layer at 64.6 c…

  • Mid-Holocene forcing of the Tsushima Warm Current to the coastal environments in southwestern Japan with a view to foraminiferal faunas

Open Access•Hiroyuki Takata, Naohisa Nishida et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2018

  • Three important Holocene tephras off the Pacific coast of the Tohoku region, Northeast Japan

Open Access•Ken Ikehara, Kazuko Usami et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2017

  • Variation in subsurface water temperature and its link to the Kuroshio Current in the Okinawa Trough during the last 38.5 kyr

Open Access•Yoshimi Kubota, Nozomi Suzuki et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2017

  • Correlation between faunal transitions of benthic foraminifera and ballasting of particulate organic carbon by siliceous plankton during the Holocene off San-in district, southwestern Japan

Open Access•Hiroyuki Takata, Takuya Itaki et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2017•Cited by: 1

We investigated the biotic response of benthic foraminifera (Rhizaria) to Holocene paleoceanographic changes in a upper bathyal environment by examining fossil benthic foraminifera younger than ~13 ka from core GH87-2-308 (316-m water depth) off San-in district, southwestern Japan. A non-metric multidimensional scaling (nm-MDS) analysis enabled the distinction of three main benthic foraminiferal assemblages and two faunal transitions. The phase 1…

  • Reappraisal of sea-level lowstand during the Last Glacial Maximum observed in the Bonaparte Gulf sediments, northwestern Australia

Open Access•Takeshige Ishiwa, Yūsuke Yokoyama et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2016

  • Late Quaternary tephrostratigraphy of Baegdusan and Ulleung Volcanoes using marine sediments in the Japan Sea/East Sea

Open Access•Chungwan Lim, Kazuhiro Toyoda et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2013

Only Ulleung and Baegdusan volcanoes have produced alkaline tephras in the Japan Sea/East Sea during the Quaternary. Little is known about their detailed tephrostratigraphy, except for the U–Oki and B–Tm tephras. Trace element analysis of bulk sediments can be used to identify alkaline cryptotephra because of the large compositional contrast. Five sediment cores spanning the interval between the rhyolitic AT (29.4 ka) and Aso-4 (87 ka) tephras we…

  • Paleoceanographic control on a large marine reservoir effect offshore of Tokai, south of Japan, NW Pacific, during the last glacial maximum-deglaciation

  • Spatial Distribution of Δ 14 C Values of Organic Matter in Surface Sediments Off Saru River in Northern Japan, One Year After a Flood Event in 2006

Open Access•Seiya Nagao, Tomohisa Irino et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2010•References: 32

Dispersion and deposition of terrestrial organic matter by flooding on the inner shelf were studied using C/N ratios, δ 13 C, and Δ 14 C values of sedimentary organic matter. Surface sediment samples (top 2 cm) were collected from coastal areas near the Saru River in southwestern Hokkaido, northern Japan, 1 yr after a flood event in 2006. Riverine suspended solids were also collected at a fixed station downstream during 2006–2008. Sandy sediments…

  • Radiocarbon Marine Reservoir Ages in the Northwestern Pacific Off Hokkaido Island, Japan, During the Last Deglacial Period

Open Access•Ken'ichi Ohkushi, Masao Uchida et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2007•References: 15

We measured radiocarbon ages of planktic foraminifera in 4 sediment cores from the northwestern Pacific region off northern Japan in order to estimate marine reservoir ages during the B⊘lling-Aller⊘d period. The ages of deglacial tephra markers from 2 Japanese source volcanoes identified in these sediment cores had been previously estimated from 14 C ages of terrestrial charcoal and buried forests. By comparing the foraminiferal and tephra ages, …

  • Millennial-scale variability of Holocene hydrography in the southwestern Okhotsk Sea

    Open Access•Chieko Shimada, Ken Ikehara et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2004•References: 2

Diatom analysis of two submarine cores off eastern Hokkaido Island, northern Japan, provides insights into the Holocene palaeoenvironmental history of the southwestern Okhotsk Sea. Diatom flora was mainly composed of open-water and/or high-productivity-related Thtalassionema nitzschioides, Neodenticula semninae and sea-ice-related species such as Bacterosira fragilis and Fragilariopsis cylindrus, suggesting millennial-scale alternation of dominan…
