  • Supplying the Augustean conquest of the Alps — investigating the origins of Roman slingshot projectiles by lead isotope analysis

Open Access•C D Standish, Hannes Flück et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2026

Lead isotope analyses of 40 lead slingshot projectiles and two lead plummets, recovered from a conflict landscape proximal to the Crap Ses Gorge in the Surses Valley, Switzerland, and thought to relate to the central marching route of Augustus’ Alpine Campaigns (late 1st c. BCE), are presented. Results point to a centralised production using a mixed lead stock primarily derived from the Almería-Cartagena Volcanic Belt of the southeastern Iberian …

  • Human mobility amid emerging sedentism in the Central Zagros

Open Access•Giulia Ragazzon, Roger Matthews et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Environmental…•2026

The Neolithic of Southwest Asia (c. 10,000–5,200 BCE) is associated with increasing residential stability alongside resource domestication processes. Yet, the trajectories of sedentism varied widely, with balances between sedentary and mobile behaviors contextually driven by subsistence needs, cultural practices and expanding interaction networks. In the Central Zagros, a key area for early domestication and settled life, the role of human mobili…

  • The age of hand stencils in Maltravieso cave (Extremadura, Spain) established by U-Th dating, and its implications for the early development of art

    Open Access•C D Standish, P Pettitt et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2025

U-Th dating of associated carbonate crusts has been applied to date parietal art in Maltravieso cave, Extremadura, Spain. Known for its large collection of red hand stencils (≥60), one example previously dated to >66.7 ka was taken to suggest Neandertal authorship. Here we present a more detailed U-series study of hand stencils within the cave, and place the results in the context of the chronology of these motifs worldwide. Twenty-two carbonate …

  • Reindeer prey mobility and seasonal hunting strategies in the late Gravettian mammoth steppe

    Open Access•A J E Pryor, T Nesnídalová et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2024•Cited by: 4•References: 108

Reindeer are part of the faunal suite that dominated central Europe during the last glacial cycle. Their importance to Late Gravettian hunters as prey and a source of raw materials (hide, bone, antler) is well attested, however the context of Late Gravettian reindeer predation is lesser understood. This paper presents an investigation of human and reindeer predator-prey interactions at the Late Gravettian kill-butchery site of Lubná VI, Czech Rep…

  • The Flower Garden Banks Siderastrea siderea coral as a candidate Global boundary Stratotype Section and Point for the Anthropocene series

    Open Access•Kristine L Delong, Kylie Palmer et al.•ARTICLE•The Anthropocene Review•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 77

The proposed Anthropocene Global Boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) candidate site of West Flower Garden Bank (27.8762°N, 93.8147°W) is an open ocean location in the Gulf of Mexico with a submerged coral reef and few direct human impacts. Corals contain highly accurate and precise (<±1 year) internal chronologies, similar to tree rings, and their exoskeletons are formed of aragonite and can be preserved in the rock record. Here we prese…

  • The East Gotland Basin (Baltic Sea) as a candidate Global boundary Stratotype Section and Point for the Anthropocene series

    Open Access•Jérôme Kaiser, Serena Abel et al.•ARTICLE•The Anthropocene Review•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 93

The short sediment core EMB201/7-4 retrieved from the East Gotland Basin, central Baltic Sea, is explored here as a candidate to host the stratigraphical basis for the Anthropocene series and its equivalent Anthropocene epoch, still to be formalized in the Geological Time Scale. The core has been accurately dated back to 1840 CE using a well-established event stratigraphy approach. A pronounced and significant change occurs at 26.5 cm (dated 1956…

  • The varved succession of Crawford Lake, Milton, Ontario, Canada as a candidate Global boundary Stratotype Section and Point for the Anthropocene series

    Open Access•Francine Mg Mccarthy, Robert T Patterson et al.•ARTICLE•The Anthropocene Review•2023•Cited by: 17•References: 41

An annually laminated succession in Crawford Lake, Ontario, Canada is proposed for the Global boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) to define the Anthropocene as a series/epoch with a base dated at 1950 CE. Varve couplets of organic matter capped by calcite precipitated each summer in alkaline surface waters reflect environmental change at global to local scales. Spheroidal carbonaceous particles and nitrogen isotopes record an increase in…
