Geochemistry and Petrology of Striped Chert as a Provenance Tool for Artefacts From the Krzemionki Neolithic Mining Area (Poland)
A prehistoric flint mine in Krzemionki with a neighboring area covers at least 2,300‐year history of striped chert extraction and dressing, spanning the age bracket of 3900 through 1600 B.C. The striped cherts occur in the form of concretions (nodules) varying from centimeters to at least 2 m across. This paper presents updated results of petrological and geochemical study of these siliceous rocks using optical and scanning electron microscopy, e…
A consideration of polychlorinated biphenyls as a chemostratigraphic marker of the Anthropocene
Polychlorinated biphenyls, organic pollutants of anthropogenic origin, were widely used in many industrial applications worldwide roughly from the 1930s to the 1970s. Both the use and disposal of polychlorinated biphenyls contributed to their ubiquity in different environmental compartments, and they show extremely high persistence because of their high physical and chemical stability. Concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls in environmental …
Glass microspheres as a potential indicator of the Anthropocene
Glass microspheres are spherical glass particles that have many applications including composite polymer material technology, medicine, analytical chemistry, abrasive blasting, paints, and coatings. They are widely used in the production of road and pavement marking materials, such as traffic paints, thermoplastics, and preformed markings. The abundance of glass microspheres in terrestrial deposits and possibly in marine sediments, as well as the…
The Working Group on the Anthropocene
The Anthropocene is functionally and stratigraphically distinct from the Holocene
Evidence of an Anthropocene epoch Humans are undoubtedly altering many geological processes on Earth—and have been for some time. But what is the stratigraphic evidence for officially distinguishing this new human-dominated time period, termed the “Anthropocene,” from the preceding Holocene epoch? Waters et al. review climatic, biological, and geochemical signatures of human activity in sediments and ice cores. Combined with deposits of new mater…
The geological cycle of plastics and their use as a stratigraphic indicator of the Anthropocene
Colonization of the Americas, 'Little Ice Age' climate, and bomb-produced carbon
A recently published analysis by Lewis and Maslin (Lewis SL and Maslin MA (2015) Defining the Anthropocene. Nature 519: 171-180) has identified two new potential horizons for the Holocene−Anthropocene boundary: 1610 (associated with European colonization of the Americas), or 1964 (the peak of the excess radiocarbon signal arising from atom bomb tests). We discuss both of these novel suggestions, and consider that there is insufficient stratigraph…
