Managing academics vis-a-vis the university’s third mission
This paper systematically reviews the literature from 2002 to 2022 on the evolving roles of academics within universities, focusing on the impact of the third mission – i.e., societal engagement – alongside the traditional missions of education and research. The review synthesises the findings from the scholarly literature, categorised into six primary dimensions, each reflecting different facets of how academics are adapting to new expectations.…
Authorship order and performance from the perspective of field and academic capital
The purpose of this article is to examine how authorship norms and practices vary across academic disciplines – conceptualised here as “fields” – and how these differences influence research evaluation and the distribution of academic prestige. Drawing on the concepts of cultural capital and symbolic capital , the article argues that authorship order is not merely a reflection of individual contributions but is deeply intertwined with power dynam…
Stream of blame
This paper explores how corporations and state agencies in Chile evade responsibility for environmental degradation and water scarcity by constructing narratives that blame victims for their hardships. Through three case studies, it demonstrates how these actors discredit critics, manipulate data and promote neoliberal ideals of self-reliance to shift liability away from themselves, reinforcing social and economic inequalities. The research highl…
Contextually and Procedurally
Objective: this article aims to illustrate the integration of statistical data within qualitative research through the framework of Visual Grounded Theory. Methods: Building on over a decade of methodological innovation, it shows how quantitative tools, such as regression analysis and sociometrics, can be fruitfully integrated into qualitative analysis, both contextually and procedurally, without compromising its interpretive ethos. Drawing on pr…
Narrative Journeys
This article introduces narrative journeys as a distinct approach to qualitative interviewing that foregrounds movement not as context but as an active feature of meaning-making. Drawing on two case studies—one in Chile and one in South Africa—we explore how interviews conducted while walking allow for different narrative flows, affective rhythms and relational dynamics compared to conventional sit-down formats. Rather than focusing primarily on …

Making science international
Drawing on the evolution of socio-geographical imaginaries of scholarly journals published in Chile, this article provides a picture of the socio-historical trajectories of internationalization of scholarly journals and communities in that part of the (semi-)periphery of science. In order to break with the presentism of many contemporary discussions, the analysis covers a relatively long period of time, from the end of the nineteenth century unti…

The Image of Ethnography-Making Sense of the Social Through Images
Although systematic observation and interviews are the most common techniques in ethnography, a deep understanding requires research tools adapted to exploring beyond the observational scope. Nonconventional methods can support ethnography and complement observations and thus refine the construction of meaning. Qualitative research literature deals disproportionately more with some forms of data, typically text, lacking a structured method for vi…
Twenty years of management of care in Chile
For over 20 years, the notion of 'management of care' has been foregrounded as key in the jurisdiction of the nursing profession, with the aim of detaching itself from the wider medical umbrella. A number of voices have advocated such centrality. These include juridical, academic and occupational perspectives. Critical stances, although peripheral, have also been voiced. These have been received, at best, with a 'polite silence' in mainstream cir…
Understanding the prospect of success in professional training
One of the most fundamental innovations in higher education is the introduction of the method known as problem-based learning (PBL). While literature has largely focused on its learning goals and the transition from lectures to tutorials, little research has problematised why this is a successful methodology and what we consider as students’ success. Drawing upon various ethnographic techniques, the authors analyse PBL as a field of expectations …

Examining 'Elite' Power Dynamics in Informant-Research Relations and Its Impact on Ethnographic Data Construction
This article explores how power dynamics between informants and field researchers shape ethnographic data construction, drawing on fieldwork at a pharmaceutical company. Pharmaceutical companies are considered elite settings, and often assumed to be powerful in relation to the researcher and dominating the data construction. However, such a view conceptualizes power in terms of fixed categories, in which there is a superior and subordinate positi…
Reconfiguring organisational patterns of power
The evolution of academic credentials is not only a technical process, but also a social one. Whereas the technical process involves skill development for the increasing technologisation and sophistication of work, the social process comprises phenomena such as power struggles and status construction. Exploring the interplay between doctors and nurses, this article analyses what ideologies, institutions and devices lie beneath patterns of powers …
Exploring historical conflicts between midwives and nurses
This article explores issues of historical disputes between nurses and midwives based in Chile. The interaction of these two professions in that country has become an arena of competition which leads to conflicts periodically, such as those related to the ownership of the care of new-borns, and that of projects aimed at relieving nurse shortages by enhancing midwives' nursing skills. Specifically, this article aims to build on historical and cont…
