  • LLMs as complementary tools for innovation surveys research

Open Access•Jae Hyung Park, Joshua S Yang et al.•ARTICLE•Scientometrics•2026

Surveys are a cornerstone of research metrics and innovation studies, providing key indicators for research evaluation, policy design, and comparative analysis. Yet they increasingly face declining response rates, survey fatigue, and limited explanatory depth. Traditional surveys capture what firms do but provide restricted insight into why specific strategies are chosen. This study explores whether large language models (LLMs) can generate synth…

  • Patterns of Alcohol, Cannabis, and E-Cigarette Use/Co-Use and Mental Health Among U.S. College Students

Camillia K Lui, Wura Jacobs et al.•ARTICLE•Substance Use & Misuse•2025

Substance use and mental health are highly correlated, though few studies assess the risk for depression and anxiety associated with dual and polysubstance use among college students. The purpose of this study was to characterize the relationship between alcohol, cannabis, and e-cigarette exclusive, dual, and polysubstance use and depression and anxiety among U.S. college students by racial and ethnic subgroup and stratified by sex. Data from 83,…

  • Identification of Cannabis Product Characteristics and Pricing on Dark Web Markets

Open Access•Matthew Nali, Zhuoran Li et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Psychoactive Drugs•2025

Growing cannabis use has made it the most widely cultivated and trafficked illicit drug globally according to the World Health Organization, with 147 million people consuming cannabis-derived products (CDPs) in various product forms and constituency. Despite restrictions in certain countries, unregulated access can still be found on the dark web which specializes in trafficking of illicit goods. The objective was to systematically collect data fr…

  • Universalism and particularism in the recommendations of the nobel prize for science

Open Access•Byoung-Kwon Ko, Yeongkyun Jang et al.•ARTICLE•Scientometrics•2024

From the viewpoints of universalism and particularism, this paper investigates the process of recommendation by focusing on peer review for the Nobel Prize for Science from 1901 to 1970. The results indicate that self-recommendation practices are routine, especially in developed countries, and that the recommendation network is fundamentally built on mutually beneficial relationships between countries. The analysis also reveals that political, ec…

  • Exploring the Complexities of Negotiation

    Open Access•Minyoung Choi, Joshua S Yang•ARTICLE•Journal of Artificial Societies…•2024

Organizational silos pose a common challenge for many companies, as they create barriers to communication, coordination, and resource efficiency. Addressing these challenges necessitates successful negotiation, yet the realm of multi-level team negotiation remains understudied. This research employs a computational simulation model to explore the dynamics of two-level negotiation, encompassing interactions of individuals searching for an agreemen…

  • Analyzing developmental strategies and the role of ICT in underdeveloped economies

  • Longevity of Partnering Terrorist Organization

Hyeseung Choi, Minyoung Choi et al.•ARTICLE•Terrorism and Political Violence•2024

Cooperation between two terrorist groups benefits both, but there are also risks. This paper focuses on these risks, especially how the demise of one group affects the longevity of the remaining groups. Using a generalized equation estimations (GEE) model with data from the Global Terrorism Database (GTD) from 2001 to 2016, this paper analyses how the disbanding of one partner terrorist group with the same ideology and regime type affects the lon…

  • Structural factors affecting global trends towards isolationism and expansionism - A BERGM analysis

    Open Access•Yeongkyun Jang, Joshua S Yang•ARTICLE•Global Networks•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 32

The first purpose of this study is to define the network parameters that enable systemic analysis of international relations, identifying trends towards isolationism and expansionism. The second is to analyse the factors influencing global trends towards isolationism and expansionism from a structural point of view. The results of a network analysis, including a BERGM, indicate a trend towards isolationism in the economic arena since about 2010; …

  • Sample Size and Saturation

    Open Access•Anthony S Distefano, Joshua S Yang et al.•ARTICLE•CAM•2024•References: 27

Despite recent methodological advances in saturation, guidelines for its estimation in more complex research designs-such as ethnographic studies-have been lacking. We present an accessible, step-by-step approach to empirical assessment of data saturation, tested on a moderately sized ethnographic study with 109 combined direct observations and interviews. The three-phase method includes a priori sample size prediction, provisional saturation est…

  • Strategic R&D budget allocation to achieve national energy policy targets

    Jungwoo Lee, Joshua S Yang•ARTICLE•Policy Studies•2022•References: 28

While recent international negotiations about combating climate change have led governments around the world to invest in R&D in the energy sector, funds allocated to R&D investment have remained limited during global economic downturns and dependent on national economic conditions. A systematic approach and strategic budget allocation are required to achieve various national energy policy targets. In this study, we describe the optimal investmen…

  • An agent-based model of deliberative democracy and polarization

Bokwon Lee, Yohan Kim et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Mathematical Sociology•2020•References: 6

In this paper, we examined the effect of deliberative democracy on the polarization of opinion. Through three case analyses, we find that deliberative democracy has two major components – provision of information and group discussion. Polarization of opinion can be explained by several theories: social identity theory, social comparison, and confirmation bias. We constructed a deliberative democracy model that reflected these mechanisms of polari…

  • Executive Compensation, Fat Cats, and Best Athletes

    Open Access•Jerry W Kim, Bruce Kogut et al.•ARTICLE•American Sociological Review•2015•Cited by: 24•References: 58

Income gains in the top 1 percent are the primary cause for the rapid growth in U.S. inequality since the late 1970s. Managers and executives of firms account for a large proportion of these top earners. Chief executive officers (CEOs), in particular, have seen their compensation increase faster than the growth in firm size. We propose that changes in the macro patterns of the distribution of CEO compensation resulted from a process of diffusion …

  • The Anti-Chinese Cubic Air Ordinance

Joshua S Yang, Joshua Yang•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2009

The article focuses on the Cubic Air Ordinance. The Cubic Air Ordinance was a city ordinance that required 500 cubic feet of space for every person residing in a dwelling. This occurred in the late 1860s in San Francisco, California as a result of dwindling job opportunities for white workers. This ordinance created a hostile environment for Chinese immigrants. Information is provided for how Thomas Mooney and Hugh Murray, top officials with the …
