Redefining Music Studies in an Age of Change
Creativity, diversity, and integration
During 2013–2014, the Task Force on the Undergraduate Music Major of the USA’s College Music Society prepared a report entitled Transforming Music Study from its Foundations: A Manifesto for Progressive Change in the Undergraduate Preparation of Music Majors. The report is a call for increased relevance in undergraduate music studies that prepare students for leadership, adaptability, and initiative in advancing the values of music and musicians …
Freeing music education from schooling
This article argues that school music programs in the United States are too concerned with preparing and polishing large ensemble performances, such that students do not have the skills needed for life-long musical involvement. The author suggests that school music programs will only survive in the future if teachers place more emphasis on creating partnerships between school music and community music of various kinds. Survey data is provided to …

Age at First Childbirth and Later Poverty
A linear structural equation model is used in this research study in order to estimate the simultaneous effects of age at first birth on a woman's subsequent socioeconomic conditions and related outcomes after the age of 27 years. Estimation was accomplished with a variant of Amemiya's principle and a feasible generalized least squares estimator. Analysis involved examination of the bivariate relationship between age at first birth and poverty at…
Farm background, socioeconomic status, and fertility
This paper reports on an examination of whether the effects of farm background on socioeconomic differentials in fertility are diminished among nonfarm couples. The data are for a sample of white ever‐married women belonging to the 1901–1910 birth cohorts. The research provides another test of the two‐generation‐urbanite hypothesis first advanced by Goldberg. Unlike a number of other studies, the findings do not support the hypothesis. Reasons fo…
The Role of Responsibility and Knowledge in Reducing Teenage Out-of-Wedlock Childbearing

Student Discipline and High School Performance
This paper examines the relationship between student misbehavior and academic performance and the effects offamily structure and mother's employment on misbehavior and performance. Using panel data on high school sophomores from the High School and Beyond (HSB) survey, we estimate a number of linear panel models. The findings indicate that sophomores with low grades misbehave more as seniors than those with high grades. Academic achievement in th…

Status Characteristics
Status characteristics theories attempt to explain the emergence of observable power and prestige hierarchies in informal task groups based on the perceived performance expectations connoted by differential ranks on status characteristics. Generally, these theories have assumed that the task performance expectation-formation processes operate similarly regardless of whether the status characteristic has been made explicitly relevant to the task o…
