The importance of walking for public transport – just the first and last mile?
Policies for public transport and walking support sustainable mobility in urban contexts. While public transport necessitates walking, policies that integrate both modes in a cohesive manner remain scarce. To raise awareness and illustrate the symbiotic relationship between walking and public transport, we analyse data from 7,919 public transport (PT) trips comprising 38,933 trip legs. To address the challenge of diverse PT travel chains, a clust…
Bicycle-friendly infrastructure planning in Beijing and Copenhagen - between adapting design solutions and learning local planning cultures
Bikeability – Urban structures supporting cycling. Effects of local, urban and regional scale urban form factors on cycling from home and workplace locations in Denmark
From people to cycling indicators
Effects of upgrading to cycle highways - An analysis of demand induction, use patterns and satisfaction before and after
The objective of the present study is to investigate the effects of improvements made to two large, interconnected bicycle infrastructure in the western suburbs of Copenhagen, Denmark, on bicycle volumes and mode share, and cyclists' behaviour, perceptions, and experiences. Effects are assessed by analysing data from automatic counting stations during 35 months to measure the changes in bicycle volumes on the investigated routes. Furthermore, a q…

Changes to urban form and commuting patterns
This paper compares indicators of polycentricity in a monocentric (MUR) and a polycentric urban region (PUR) in Denmark at two points in time (1982 and 2002). It describes how population, jobs and commuting indicators of polycentricity develop and interact over time. Both the MUR and the PUR tend towards more balanced development. The increasing size of the main node in the PUR is the only deviation from the general trend. The general tendency to…
Urban planning practices for bikeable cities – the case of Copenhagen
Cities are increasingly looking to cycling as a means to promote sustainability, liveability, and public health. Denmark is one of the European countries where cycling has remained significant – even in the motor age, and national strategies now aim to support and further increase cycling. The article presents the state of cycling in Denmark and Copenhagen – as well as the cycling promoting efforts of the city of Copenhagen which is one of the fo…
Mapping bicyclists’ experiences in Copenhagen
Commuting behaviour and urban form
This paper is an empirical investigation of the relation between urban form and commuting behaviour in a polycentric urban region. It explores to what extent urban form and location variables help to explain commuting time, distance and mode based on an empirical case, East Jutland, which is a polycentric urban region in Denmark. Data from the National Transport Survey of Denmark were used for this quantitative analysis and two time periods were …
Children, Mobility, and Space
This article discusses the potentials of a mixed methods approach to the study of children’s mobility patterns. The methodology presented here combined ethnographic fieldwork with global positioning system technology and an interactive questionnaire that children completed via mobile phone. This innovative methodology allowed the researchers to generate a rich understanding of children’s everyday movements. The study combined documentation of chi…
Peri-urbanisation and multifunctional adaptation of agriculture around Copenhagen
Peri-urbanisation, as a process of the physical expansion of settlement areas but also socio-economic transformation, has been recognised as a major spatial development beyond the urban fringes. Agriculture, the main land use actor in the hinterlands of many urban areas is increasingly affected by urban encroachment, responds with adaptation strategies and farming activities to cope with the peri-urban framework conditions. Adaptation pathways en…
Do green areas affect health? Results from a Danish survey on the use of green areas and health indicators
Exploratory mapping of commuter flows in England and Wales
Urban Fields in the Making
This paper analyses the development of the scale of spatial interaction in Denmark and its consequences for commute patterns around the country's two largest cities. The methods used are GIS-based mapping of commuter flows and analysis of the changing correlation between centrality and commuting from 1982 to 2002. The distances bridged by commuting and the size of functional regions have expanded markedly. The consequences for commute patterns de…
