The Anthropologist as Critic
Astonishment and Evocation
All societies are shaped by arts, media, and other persuasive practices that can awe, captivate, enchant or otherwise seem to cast a spell on the audience. Likewise, scholarship itself often is driven by a sense of wonder and a willingness to be open to what lies beyond the obvious. This book broadens and deepens this perspective. Inspired by Stephen Tyler’s view of ethnography as an art of evocation, international scholars from the fields of aes…
Embodied viewing and Degas's Little Dancer Aged Fourteen
This paper presents a cross-disciplinary project based on an experiment in eye-tracking and motion capture (Sainsbury’s Centre for Visual Arts), which aimed to study viewers’ movements around an iconic sculpture: Edgar Degas’s Little Dancer Aged Fourteen. The experiment studies how viewers respond to this three-dimensional artwork not only by looking at it but also through their own bodily reactions to it, such as by unconsciously mimicking a rep…

The Materiality of Color
This article presents a theory of the materiality of color which derives in part from the non-denotative approach to signification opened by the Symbolist poets' experimentation with the sensory qualities of language. Its specific focus is on the connotative power of various uses of indigo
Kaleidoscope
Imbert's philosophical writings return time and time again to the question of the image. What follows will explore in what terms she does so. The means I will adopt are a lateral exploration of a series of fragments, an assemblage of sorts, which follows the thread provided by a number of images themselves. Steering a path between logic, anthropology and an expanded aesthetics, I will take up the thread of an ongoing concern in Imbert's philosoph…

Levi-Strauss, Anthropology, and Aesthetics
Structure and sensation
In the 1670s, a famous quarrel occurred at the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture about whether line or colour is more important in painting. It opposed the Poussinistes, lead by Le Brun, the then director of the Académie and Premier Peintre du Roi, to the Rubenistes. The former defended a rationally inspired pictorial classicism; the latter, the expressive force of colour. One of the key arguments put forward by the former camp, which w…
Lévi-Strauss's mytho-poem
In the preceding chapter I have argued that the Mythologiques is a book about aesthetics; a treatise on the aesthetic doubling as a study of Amerindian myths. What I will show in this chapter is that if the Mythologiques is concerned with aesthetic problems and, in particular, the mechanisms of aesthetic creation, it is because it is itself, at yet a third level of interpretation, an aesthetic creation. Beyond the anthropological project, beyond …
The Cambridge Companion to Lévi-Strauss
Claude Lévi-Strauss is one of the major thinkers of the modern age. Regarded as a crucial figure in the development of structuralism, his writings are studied across a wide range of disciplines, including anthropology, philosophy and literary studies. The Cambridge Companion to Lévi-Strauss presents a major reassessment of his work and influence. The fifteen specially-commissioned essays in this volume engage with the controversies that have surr…

Lévi-Strauss, Anthropology and Aesthetics
In a wide-ranging 2007 study of Claude Lévi-Strauss's aesthetic thought, Boris Wiseman demonstrates not only its centrality within his oeuvre but also the importance of Levi-Strauss for contemporary aesthetic enquiry. Reconstructing the internal logic of Lévi-Strauss's thinking on aesthetics, and showing how anthropological and aesthetic ideas intertwine at the most elemental levels in the elaboration of his system of thought, Wiseman demonstrate…
