(Trans)formation of student teachers’ professional identity through problem-based learning in Korea
The current study explored in what ways a problem-based learning (PBL) programme influenced the (trans)formation of the professional identities of six student teachers of English. The student teachers’ narratives and responses to the questionnaires involved the (re)formed pedagogic meanings and related actions and emotions which constitute their professional identities. Data analysis disclosed that the PBL programme contributed to the formation a…
Development of self-directed learning readiness of English language learners through mobile-assisted problem-based learning
Application of Problem-Based Learning in English Language Teaching
Problem-based learning (PBL) is a pedagogical approach that helps learners develop (meta)cognitive and social skills. In PBL, students identify problems, design strategies, implement them, and reflect on their resolution process. When applied in English language teaching (ELT), students interact throughout these phases, developing language competencies. However, PBL application has not been methodically reviewed, despite its potential to reveal p…
Effect of electronic cigarette atomising power and flavour on aerosol size-segregated metal concentration and inhalation risk
The calculated health risks suggest substantial risks of inhalation of metal aerosols from e-cig use
Assessing Metal Exposures Among Children Living in Environmental Justice Communities Near Metal Recycling Facilities in Houston, Texas
Findings point to the need for adequately powered studies among potentially vulnerable children living in EJ communities to profile metal exposures and identify important sources of these exposures
Contextualization of Communicative Language Teaching in Confucian Heritage Culture
Based on the comprehensive comparison of the principles of communicative language teaching (CLT) and the pedagogic ideas of Confucian heritage culture (CHC), this study discusses the conceptual common ground, where both principles can be reconciled, and considers practical, negotiated pedagogic forms with the suggestion of some cases of contextualization of CLT in CHC. In summary, CLT and CHC can be reconciled in their pursuit of education for th…
Effects of Road Traffic on the Accuracy and Bias of Low-Cost Particulate Matter Sensor Measurements in Houston, Texas
Although PM 2.5 measurements of low-cost particulate matter sensors (LCPMS) generally show moderate and strong correlations with those from research-grade air monitors, the data quality of LCPMS has not been fully assessed in urban environments with different road traffic conditions. We examined the linear relationships between PM 2.5 measurements taken by an LCPMS (Dylos DC1700) and two research grade monitors, a personal environmental monitor (…
Comprehension of experienced English language teachers’ professional identity and related metacognitive thinking procedures
In order to comprehend the attributes of expert teachers, the current study investigated professional identity (PI) and related metacognitive thinking procedures of experienced Korean teachers of English through a questionnaire survey and interviews. The teachers’ PIs contained pedagogic meanings that highly regarded teachers’ having language knowledge and skills, realising learner-centred practices, teaching communication skills for practicality…
Development of Professional Identity and Related Metacognitive Thinking Procedures of English Language Teachers Through Spontaneous Collaboration for Pedagogical Problem-Solving
This research explores potential benefits of the spontaneous collaboration of a small group of teachers regarding their professional identity (PI) and related metacognitive thinking procedures. The researcher conceptualizes the co-operation of PI and metacognition via interactive pedagogical problem-solving and presents spontaneous collaboration processes of a beginning teacher (BT) and an experienced teacher (ET) of English. Based on the qualita…
The Intercontinental Terminals Chemical Fire Study
On Sunday, 17 March 2019, a fire erupted at the Intercontinental Terminals Company (ITC, Deer Park, La Porte, TX, USA), resulting in a large fire that blazed for several days. In response, we rapidly launched disaster response activities to monitor air pollutants (total volatile organic compounds (TVOCs), fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ), black carbon (BC), and ultra-fine particles (UFPs) during the fire in two affected communities. To assess im…
A Mixed-Methods Study to Examine the Role of Psychosocial Stress and Air Pollution on Hypertension in Mexican-Origin Hispanics
Our findings add to the evidence of a positive association between individual and family stressors on hypertension among Hispanics and other racial/ethnic groups. Contrary to previous studies reporting positive associations, our results suggest that long-term exposure to O 3 may be inversely related to prevalent hypertension
Accessing Disadvantaged Pregnant Women in Houston, Texas, and Characterizing Biomarkers of Metal Exposure
Communities of color or low socioeconomic status are disproportionately affected by metal exposure given spatial variability of the ambient levels of these contaminants. Despite this, there is little research characterizing metal concentrations in blood among disadvantaged populations in the U.S., especially among pregnant women who are particularly vulnerable and difficult to access. Thus, we conducted a pilot study among disadvantaged pregnant …
