  • Accurate Lacustrine and Wetland Sediment Accumulation Rates Determined from 14 C Activity of Bulk Sediment Fractions

    Open Access•W G Walker, Gregg R Davidson et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2007•Cited by: 5•References: 18

In the absence of identifiable macrofossils in lacustrine sediments, radiocarbon dating must rely on pollen or bulk sediment fractions. Bulk sediment fractions are not generally preferred because they contain an unknown mixture of organic material of variable age, they may contain dead carbon such as lignite that is difficult to eliminate, and material of aquatic origin may be subject to reservoir effects. If the various processes that contribute…

  • Private higher education

    W G Walker•ARTICLE•Journal of Education Policy•1988•References: 1

Among the chief characteristics of the post‐industrial society are ambiguity and paradox. In Australian higher education, as in other sectors of Australian Society, these have found expression in individualism, private initiative and entrepreneuship. The ‘privatization’ of higher education now includes the imposition on enrolment charges, the re‐introduction of ‘full cost’ fees, especially for private overseas students, moves towards the deregula…

  • The Development of the Free Public High School in Illinois during the Nineteenth Century

    W G Walker•ARTICLE•History of Education Quarterly•1964

Frederick Jackson Turner tends to stress, on the part of the frontiersman, return to primitive conditions, a plowing with a sharp stick.' While the regression to a form of semi-barbarism was certainly typical of frontiersmen in some areas, particularly in the eighteenth century, there is evidence to suggest that settlers in the Middle West during the early nineteenth century can by no means be described in toto as primitive. Indeed, it may be not…
