The article is part of a B.A. thesis in which the author studies the relations between folk traditions and archaeological research. She analyses the oral traditions related to a mythical figure called Lintver, a kind of a snake-like dragon that apparently lived in Jezero above village Rodik (southwestern Slovenia). Mid-nineteenth century descriptions and local oral traditions suggest that the parish in Brezovica organized regular monthly processi…

  • Village Spatial Structure in Oral Tradition and Rituals of the Karst

    Open Access•Katja Hrobat•ARTICLE•Traditiones•2010•References: 8

    Open Access•Katja Hrobat•ARTICLE•Studia mythologica Slavica•2009•Cited by: 1•References: 2

The article is part of a wider research into the perception of space in oral tradition. The qualification of space relies on the constitution of a border, which acts between the opposites it divides. The research focuses on the cadastral boundary, which is the main mediator between the worlds. In the case of Rodik it is defined by apparitions, sacrifices, and burials of creatures, which inhabit the world in-between (»bloody leg«, vedamec, snake, …

The authors endeavour to understand the symbolic power of crossroads through the ethnographical records from Istria and the Karst in Slovenia. From the Antiquity to this day the crossroads are marked with different monuments, ranging from ancient landmarks and Christian symbols to memorials to fallen heroes and national monuments. In peoples' imagination crossroads are perceived as dangerous places, where different demonic forces gather and meet.…

    Open Access•Katja Hrobat•ARTICLE•European Journal of Archaeology•2007•Cited by: 3•References: 3

This article addresses the potential of oral tradition (folklore) in the archaeological study of the past. It deals with oral traditions concerning landscape features in the area of the prehistoric and Roman site of Ajdovščina above Rodik, Slovenia. The palimpsest nature of modern landscapes can be regarded as a syncretic sum of past ways of life, land use, religious practices, and cults. In oral tradition concerning the ancient inhabitants of Aj…

  • Ajdi z Ajdovščine nad Rodikom Ajdi from Ajdovščina above Rodik

    Open Access•Katja Hrobat•ARTICLE•Studia mythologica Slavica•2005•Cited by: 1

The giants, in Slovenian called the Ajdi, are believed to be the oldest inhabitants of the Earth. The word Ajd has drawn attention up till now just for its possible indication of the archaeological sites. It is taken for a widely spread motif in folkloristics. The author includes the narratives about the continuity, cohabitation and appearance of the Ajdi from the prehistoric and Roman settlement on Ajdovščina above Rodik in the context of the sp…
