The Preclassic military macaw (Ara militaris) from the Cueva de Avendaños (Chihuahua, Mexico) was not locally procured
The oldest macaw specimen in Pre-Hispanic Mexico and the southwestern United States was recovered in Cueva de Avendaños, Chihuahua, Mexico, at the base of the Sierra Madre Occidental. It dates to the Late Archaic/Early Agricultural period (1929-2057 cal BP). The head is the only preserved element of the macaw and it was mummified through natural causes. Research on this specimen examines its sex identification and its geographical range, question…
Xochicalco
Extreme Environments in Archaeology
Advances in hunter-gatherer research in Mexico
Interest in the first hunter-gatherer populations of Mexico has increased in the last fifteen years. Exploration of the Late Pleistocene localities involved in the early peopling of Mexico, including the discovery of new ones and reanalysis of known ones, and the application of new methods and techniques (e.g. AMS radiocarbon dating, stable isotopes, scanning electron microscopy, palaeobotanical analysis) have increased. Archaeozoology has contri…
Latin America covers one of the regions with the greatest biodiversity in the world, where, for millennia and up to the present time, human societies have developed a complex and close biological and cultural relationship with animals. While this relationship has been studied from the particular standpoint of different disciplines and with different focuses within the natural and social sciences, studies aimed at the search for comparative patter…
Possible co-existence of two species of genus Meleagris at Monte Albán, Oaxaca
La arqueozoología en Latinoamérica
A brief review of the historical development of Archaeozoology is provided, in particular the issue is centered on its development in the Latin American region in the past 10 years, where it is observed an exponential growth on work teams and themes. It is proposed that in the agenda for the next years the human and faunal interactions are explored in a tight relationship with Ethnozoology, since Latin America comprises a great diversity both bio…
