  • Neo-Saussurean perspectives on the concept of the linguistic sign and their historiographical evaluation

    Open Access•Gerda Hassler•ARTICLE•Language & History•2025

E.F.K. Koerner’s work on Saussure contributed significantly to the historiography of linguistics, challenging existing tenets. Saussure’s posthumously published manuscripts reveal a more complex view of his linguistic theories than previously understood from the Cours de linguistique générale (CLG), suggesting a broader range of interests including speech (linguistique de la parole). This complexity raises questions about the need to re-evaluate …

  • Grammaticalisation avant la lettre

    Open Access•Gerda Hassler•ARTICLE•Histoire Épistémologie Langage•2025

  • The development of the concept of ʽevidentialityʼ and its exogenous application to European languages

    Open Access•Gerda Hassler•ARTICLE•Language & History•2023

The concept of ‘evidentiality’ is the only example of an exogenous application of a category derived from the description of Amerindian languages to the description of European languages. In this contribution, first the consideration of evidentiality in ancient descriptions of American Indian languages is addressed. The missionaries followed the model of Latin grammars, but in some cases, they realised that these languages were substantially diff…

  • Marcadores de evidencialidade no português do Brasil

    Open Access•Gerda Hassler•ARTICLE•Confluência•2021•References: 5

  • Evidentiality In Romance Languages. Explanatory Potential of a Concept and Its Applications In Pragmatics

    Open Access•Gerda Hassler•ARTICLE•Cadernos de Linguística e Teoria…•2021

Defined narrowly, evidentiality pertains to the sources of knowledge or evidence whereby the speaker feels entitled to make a factual claim. But evidentiality may also be conceived more broadly as both providing epistemic justification and reflecting speaker's attitude towards the validity of the communicated information, and hearer's potential acceptability of the information, derived from the degree of reliability of the source and mode of acce…

  • The Functional-Communicative Approach to Language of the Potsdam School in the German Democratic Republic

    Gerda Hassler•ARTICLE•History of Humanities•2020

After explaining the basic tenets of the Potsdam theory of functional-communicative linguistics, firmly rooted in the German Democratic Republic (1949–90), this article discusses the ‘forgetting processes’ that consigned this theory to oblivion. Profiting from the uniformity of the system of general education in the GDR, the Potsdam school had a considerable influence on textbook production. The paradigm associated with it, however, was never rea…

    Gerda Hassler•ARTICLE•Historiographia Linguistica•2019•References: 2

  • Linguistic relativity and language as epiphenomenon

    Open Access•Gerda Hassler•ARTICLE•Confluência•2018

The assumption of linguistics relativity and the definition of languages as epiphenomena are certainly known as two contradictory positions from the last century. But I will start my discussion of them in the period of their appearance and then use this as a basis to evaluate the heuristic value of these positions in present day linguistics. I will start with the definition of language as an epiphenomenon and then I will go on with the linguistic…

  • Evidentiality and the expression of speaker’s stance in Romance languages and German

    Open Access•Gerda Hassler•ARTICLE•Discourse Studies•2015•Cited by: 1•References: 39

In recent years, the category of evidentiality has also come into use for the description of Romance languages and of German. This has been contingent on a change in its interpretation from a typological category to a semantic-pragmatic category, which allows an application to languages lacking specialised morphemes for the expression of evidentiality. We consider evidentiality to be a structural dimension of grammar, the values of which are expr…

    Open Access•Gerda Hassler•ARTICLE•Lidil•2005•Cited by: 1•References: 1
