  • The UK’s middle-income dietary trap: High emissions, low nutrition

Open Access•Yunhuan Gao, Pablo Piñero et al.•ARTICLE•Ecological Economics•2026

Dietary transitions driven by income disparity increasingly impose a dual burden on health and the climate. This study integrates the Nutrient Rich Food (NRF 9.3 ) index and Global Warming Potential (GWP) to evaluate the nutrition‐carbon trade-off in UK household food purchases in 2013. Our analysis reveals a “middle-income dietary trap”. Across Deciles 4–8, households increase their overall food purchases as income rises, but this expansion is d…

  • Environmental footprints of German food consumption by gender and socio-economic status

Open Access•Simon Grabow, Elisabeth Laa et al.•ARTICLE•Ecological Economics•2026

Germany's dietary patterns are among the most environmentally intensive in the world. In light of the multitude of environmental pressures originating from the current food system, we scrutinise the carbon, land, blue and green water foodprints of German consumers, distinguishing between two subgroups of interest: gender and socio-economic status. Using the multi-regional Food and Agriculture Biomass Input-Output model we are able to capture emis…

  • Eating healthy or wasting less? Reducing resource footprints of food consumption

Open Access•Hanna Helander, Meike Brückner et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2021

To feed future populations on ever-scarcer natural resources, policy initiatives aim to decrease resource footprints of food consumption. While adopting healthier diets has shown great potential to reduce footprints, current political initiatives primarily address strategies to reduce food waste, with the target of halving food waste at retail and consumption levels by 2030. Using Germany as a case study, we compare the resource-saving potential …

  • Reflection: Food as pleasure or pressure? The care politics of the pandemic

    Open Access•Meike Brückner, Sandra Čajić et al.•ARTICLE•Food and Foodways•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 9

Pleasure and pressure are two sides of the same coin when it comes to the unpaid care economy. Food is the lens through which we examine the Janus-faced character of care during the Covid-19 pandemic. Based on qualitative empirical findings, we argue that time is crucial to whether people experience ambivalence, joy or constraints in providing food for the self, the family and the wider community. In Berlin, Germany, the pandemic lockdown and clo…

  • Supply versus use designs of environmental extensions in input–output analysis: Conceptual and empirical implications for the case of energy

Open Access•Hanspeter Wieland, Stefan Giljum et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Industrial Ecology•2020

Input–output analysis is one of the central methodological pillars of industrial ecology. However, the literature that discusses different structures of environmental extensions (EEs), that is, the scope of physical flows and their attribution to sectors in the monetary input–output table (MIOT), remains fragmented. This article investigates the conceptual and empirical implications of applying two different but frequently used designs of EEs, us…

Open Access•Arnold Tukker, Arjan de Koning et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Industrial Ecology•2018

Global multiregional input‐output databases (GMRIOs) became the standard tool for tracking environmental impacts through global supply chains. To date, several GMRIOs are available, but the numerical results differ. This paper considers how GMRIOs can be made more robust and authoritative. We show that GMRIOs need detail in environmentally relevant sectors. On the basis of a review of earlier work, we conclude that the highest uncertainty in foot…

Meike Brückner, Martin Bruckner•CHAPTER•Early American Cartographies•2011

This chapter focuses on a plot of rebellion in the captaincy of Minas Gerais. Upon its discovery, Portuguese commissioners named one of their star cartographers, Jose Joaquim da Rocha, as one of the possible instigators of a nascent independence movement. Rocha became a suspect after several co-conspirators had declared his maps to be a practical guide for coordinating the movement's plans. For Rocha's maps to be thus accused came as a surprise t…

  • The Ambulatory Map: Commodity, Mobility, and Visualcy in Eighteenth-Century Colonial America

    Meike Brückner, Martin Bruckner•ARTICLE•Winterthur Portfolio•2011

This essay examines the cultural significance of “ambulatory maps” in the Atlantic world between 1700 and 1800. Comparing stationary and portable maps, the essay in particular explores the emergent genre of the commercial pocket map. As “things-in-motion,” pocket maps occupied a unique place in American material life. Used for mapping people’s transits while at the same time being objects in transit, pocket maps constituted a unique visual and li…

  • Carbon and Materials Embodied in the International Trade of Emerging Economies: A Multiregional Input‐Output Assessment of Trends Between 1995 and 2005

Open Access•Kirsten S Wiebe, Meike Brückner et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Industrial Ecology•2012

Production in emerging economies, such as Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, and Argentina (BRICSA), increased substantially over the past two decades. This is, on the one hand, due to growing domestic demand within these countries, and, on the other hand, due to a deepened international division of work. Global trade linkages have become denser and production chains are no longer restricted to only one or two countries. The volume of in…
