  • Color, Race, and Genomic Ancestry in Brazil: Dialogues between Anthropology and Genetics

Ricardo Ventura Santos, Peter Henry Fry et al.•ARTICLE•Current Anthropology•2009•Cited by: 36•References: 82

In the contemporary world, "race" narratives are so multifaceted that at times, different views of the concept appear mutually incompatible. In recent decades biologists, especially geneticists, have repeatedly stated that the notion of race does not apply to the human species. On the other hand, social scientists claim that race is highly significant in cultural, historical, and socioeconomic terms because it molds everyday social relations and …

  • Genetic Variation of the Y Chromosome in Chibcha-Speaking Amerindians of Costa Rica and Panama

    Edward A Ruiz-Narváez, Fabrício R Santos et al.•ARTICLE•Human Biology•2005•Cited by: 7•References: 4

Genetic variation of the Y chromosome in five Chibchan tribes (Bribri, Cabecar, Guaymi, Huetar, and Teribe) of Costa Rica and Panama was analyzed using six microsatellite loci (DYS19, DYS389A, DYS389B, DYS390, DYS391, and DYS393), the Y-chromosome-specific alphoid system (alphah), the Y-chromosome Alu polymorphism (YAP), and a specific pre-Columbian transition (C-->T) (M3 marker) in the DYS 199 locus that defines the Q-M3 haplogroup. Thirty-nine …

  • Razões para banir o conceito de raça da medicina brasileira

    Open Access•Sérgio D J Pena•ARTICLE•História Ciências Saúde-Manguinhos•2005•Cited by: 25•References: 56

  • Y-Chromosome Haplotypes in Azoospermic Israeli Men

    Cláudia Carvalho, C M B Carvalho et al.•ARTICLE•Human Biology•2004

Among azoospermic and severely oligozoospermic men, 7-15% present microdeletions of a region on the long arm of the Y chromosome that has been called AZF (azoospermia factor). Because these deletions present varying relative frequencies in different populations, we decided to ascertain whether their presence was correlated with specific Y-chromosome haplotypes. For that, we evaluated 51 infertile Israeli men, 9 of whom had microdeletions in AZF. …

  • Pode a genética definir quem deve se beneficiar das cotas universitárias e demais ações afirmativas

    Open Access•Sérgio D J Pena, Maria Cátira Bortolini•ARTICLE•Estudos Avançados•2004•Cited by: 21•References: 19

  • Color and genomic ancestry in Brazilians

    Open Access•Flavia C Parra, R Amado et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the National…•2003

This work was undertaken to ascertain to what degree the physical appearance of a Brazilian individual was predictive of genomic African ancestry. Using a panel of 10 population-specific alleles, we assigned to each person an African ancestry index (AAI). The procedure was able to tell apart, with no overlaps, 20 males from northern Portugal from 20 males from São Tomé Island on the west coast of Africa. We also tested 10 Brazilian Amerindians an…

  • Origin of Amerindian Y‐chromosomes as inferred by the analysis of six polymorphic markers

Open Access•Nestor O Bianchi, Graciela Bailliet et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1997

We analysed the frequency of six Y-specific polymorphisms in 105 Amerindian males from seven different populations, 42 Caucasian males, and a small number of males of African, Chinese, and Melanesian origin. The combination of three of the six polymorphisms studied produced four different Y-haplogroups. The haplogroup A (non-variant) was the most frequent one. Eighty-five percent of Amerindians showing haplogroup A have the alphoid II (αhII) and …
