Ventures of Women in Relation to Religion and Violence
This article is one of gratitude to three scholars—Grace Jantzen, Hannah Arendt and Judith Butler—who encouraged my feminist leanings. Jantzen’s reading of Arendt’s The Human Condition (1959) prompted her move from a literal to a figurative form of the term ‘natality’. Arendt’s emphasis on human suffering also attracted Jantzen. Instead of rejecting Arendt’s ‘natality’ as a literal mode of maternity, Jantzen affirmed Arendt’s position, where, tog…

Pamela Sue Anderson's Journeying With Paul Ricoeur
This essay on the life and work of Pamela Sue Anderson traces aspects of her scholarly work that I was very fortunate to share with her over twenty-six years. What brought us together was our commitment to feminism but also our strong interest in the work of Paul Ricoeur – which seemed to many people an odd combination, given Ricoeur’s silence on the topic of women and gender issues. Over the years, we met at conferences, read each other’s books,…

Women, Religion, and the Gift: An Abundance of Riches
This book introduces the special dynamics of women and their close relationships with the gift in both past and contemporary religious settings. Written from a cross-cultural perspective, it challenges depictions of women's roles in religion where they have been relegated to compliance with specifically designated gendered attributes. The different chapters contest the resultant stereotypes that deny women agency. Each chapter describes women as …
Comparative Religion and its Vicissitudes in an Age of Globalization
This article is a survey of some of the major challenges that have been directed at Comparative Religion during the last forty years. A number of these regard such an orientation as simply a construction that is a product of a scholar’s imagination. Others regard it as exhibiting a distinctly western, specifically Christian influence that is dismissive of other religions. Nonetheless, there have been attempts to redress this imbalance and challen…
Revisiting Postcolonialism and Religion
This essay will review contemporary developments in postcolonialism and Religious Studies. One compelling reason for such a review is that globalization is regarded by many as a contemporary version of colonialism—not necessarily undertaken by nation states, but by international business conglomerates, with similar untoward effects. Particularly, it will survey the effects of globalization and further adaptations that may still need to be underta…
Paul Ricoeur on life and death

The Impact of Gender on Religious Studies
The theme of gender in religion has not been dealt with homogenously given the many research areas that feed into the discipline of religious studies. This paper reviews the different uses of "gender" over the last 20 years. It notes that, though there is no single definition of the word, "gender" as a term has had a very great impact on the way women have formulated their demand for equality of treatment and renegotiated or even raised new claim…

Method and Theory in Religious Studies: Retrospect and Prognostications
There is a distinct possibility that, in the twenty-first century, Religious Studies as a discipline could come into its own. Its multidisciplinary orientation, if handled with due critical awareness as to its own former grandiose ambitions and present entanglements, could provide insight into the various problems that beset contemporary existence. Religious Studies has been involved in a number of internal debates that have sapped its energies a…
Gender, Genre and Religion: Feminist Reflections
Many feminists today are challenging the outmoded aspects of both the conventions and the study of religion in radical ways. Canadian feminists are no exception. Gender, Genre and Religion is the outcome of a research network of leading women scholars organized to survey the contribution of Canadian women working in the field of religious studies and, further, to “plot the path forward.” This collection of their essays covers most of the major re…
Gender and Religion: A Volatile Mixture
In recent years the term "gender" has been used with many different meaning as well as in applications that are far from consistent. Is this diversity an indication that the term should be abandoned because of such imprecision, or can certain current or purposes, however illdefined, still be discerned? This paper is an investigation of contemporary usages of the term "gender" and the implications that could result for women involved in the study …

Beyond the given and the all-giving: Extraneous Speculations on Women and the Gift
There needs to be a recognition that the phenomenon of the gift and the fascination it exerts for contemporary thinkers is a measure of dissatisfaction with prevailing norms. As a test case, the phenomenon of the gift needs to be perceived as an instance of heterogeneity in a culture that, despite its convoluted escape mechanisms, cannot honestly confront its repressive controlling impulses. The gift is thus a symptom par excellence of Western te…

Levinas: Alterity, the feminine and women-A meditation

Feminism and the Self
The subject of the self is a controversial topic in many disciplines, and the added ingredient of a feminist perspective serves to increase the complexity of the debate. This article surveys various options that have been presented by women scholars in an effort to delineate what sort of self or selves is appropriate for contemporary women. These discussions are not isolated, or arbitrary, as they must take into consideration the current theories…
