When the world becomes ‘too real’: A Bayesian explanation of autistic perception
Brief communication: Bone remodeling rates in Pleistocene humans are not slower than the rates observed in modern populations: A reexamination of Abbott et al. (1996)
Bone histomorphometry has been applied to the lower limb cortical bone of Pleistocene humans to establish age at death and to determine bone remodeling rates (Abbott et al.: Am J Phys Anthropol 226 (1996) 307–313). Both of these procedures require the determination of osteon density and mean osteon size. Previous analyses of Middle and Late Pleistocene human lower limb bones have produced bone remodeling rates that are slower than those determine…

Olivi's Peaceable Kingdom: A Reading of the Apocalypse Commentary
Everyone who knows anything at all about Petrus Iohannis Olivi knows that his Apocalypse commentary was censured; yet opinions on that condemnation vary. The basic facts are clear. After Olivi's death in 1298, his writings were suppressed by the Franciscan order, yet his tomb at Narbonne became such a popular pilgrimage site that by the second decade of the fourteenth century the crowds were said to rival those a the Porziuncula in Assisi. In 131…

Olivi and Franciscan Poverty: The Origins of the Usus Pauper Controversy
Olivi, Apocalyptic Expectation, and Visionary Experience
If Peter John Olivi was given less than his due by previous generations of scholars, the present generation seems bent on making it up to him. Recent writers have identified him as a father of fourteenth-century nominalism, as a major architect of the dogma of papal infallibility, as a trail-blazer in economic thought, and as an astute reformer whose advice, if heeded, would have saved the church a good deal of subsequent trouble. In the process,…

Further Evidence Concerning Speech in Neandertal Man
Seventeen measurements associated with the cranial base were compared for three groups: modem H. sapiens; Mesolithic H. sapiens; and two Neandertals, Skhiil V and the Rhodesian specimen. It was found that cranial base morphology was not substantially different in the Neandertals from modem and Mesolithic groups. The fact that cranial base morphology differs in any of the groups only negligibly precludes any reconstruction of Neandertal soft anato…

The Persecution of Peter Olivi
Ockham, Scotus, and the Censure at Avignon
The third decade of the fourteenth century might well be considered a pivotal period for William of Ockham. In the first place, it witnessed his metamorphosis from theologian into political theorist. More ominously, it was during these years that he changed from a faithful son of the church into a rebel against papal authority. Both of these transformations came about largely because of his trip to Avignon to defend himself against the charges fi…
The Apocalyptic Element in Olivi's Critique of Aristotle
Modern scholars are well aware of the role played by Petrus Iohannis Olivi in the so-called spiritual Franciscan movement. They are equally aware that his adherence to that movement was partly inspired by a theology of history which attributed eschatological significance to the Franciscan order, a theology of history based at least in part upon the views of Joachim of Fiore. On the other hand, in the last few decades Olivi's role in the developme…
