A comparison of applicant and accepted student characteristics to research training programs with implications for recruitment and selection strategy
Introduction: Very few studies have examined the relationship between student characteristics and their acceptance to research training programs that use holistic selection. The present study addressed this question using institutional and applicant data of three NIH undergraduate training programs at California State University, Long Beach. Its first aim was to examine whether the applicants to the training programs were representative of the br…
Building pathways to health-related research careers in biomedical and behavioral sciences
The BUilding Infrastructure Leading to Diversity (BUILD) undergraduate research training program is funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to strengthen the pipeline for underrepresented students through graduate school and into health-related research careers in the biomedical and behavioral sciences. This study evaluates the impact of BUILD participation at a Minority-Serving Institution in Southern California on graduate school outc…
Factors associated with applying to graduate/professional degrees for students engaged in undergraduate research experiences at minority serving institutions
Introduction: This study investigates the impact of undergraduate research experiences on applications to graduate and professional programs, particularly for underrepresented minority students at Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs). Methods: The study analyzes data collected at 10 MSIs participating in the NIH BUILD program to understand the relationship between research participation (in formal programs vs. informal research), student demograp…

Rates and Correlates of Seeking Mental Health Services Among Cambodian Refugees
Objectives. We assessed the rates and correlates of seeking mental health services among a probability sample of Cambodian refugees who needed such services. Methods. Interviewers conducted face-to-face interviews with a representative sample drawn from the largest US community of Cambodian refugees. The analytic sample included 339 persons who met past 12-month criteria for posttraumatic stress disorder, major depression disorder, or alcohol use…
Cultural Expressions of Distress
We test whether acculturation to American society is linked to higher depressive symptoms but lower neurasthenia symptoms. Depression and neurasthenia represent compelling contrasts since the first is a prevalent mental health problem in the United States and the latter is a common diagnostic entity in China. We also examine whether financial stress interacts with acculturation to explain depressive and neurasthenia symptoms. Data come from a com…
Factor Validity of Scores on a Social Support and Conflict Measure among Chinese Americans
Data collected from the Chinese American Psychiatric Epidemiological Study (CAPES) were used to examine the factor validity of selected social support and conflict indices among 1,152 married Chinese Americans. Gender, age, and a 36-item social interaction scale consisting of six separate indices of social support and social conflict (spouse, family, and friend) were factor analyzed. As expected, cross-cultural validity of scores on all six socia…
SF-36 Health Survey
BACKGROUND: Chinese Americans are one of the fastest growing ethnic groups in the United States; however, language and cultural obstacles have challenged health workers and policy makers seeking to understand the health status and needs of this population. OBJECTIVES: This study is the first to use a large-scale probability design to evaluate the 36-item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36) in a Chinese population (n = 1,501). METHODS: Using the Inte…
After theSa-i-gu (April 29) Los Angeles riots
Using 498 randomly selected Korean residents in Los Angeles from a recent epidemiological health telephone survey, correlates of subjective well-being in the Korean-American community were investigated including riot victim status, perceived riot effects, demographic variables (age, gender, and income), acculturation, and social support and social integration variables, approximately 6 months after the Sa-i-gu (April 29) Los Angeles Riots. Multip…
Treatment outcomes of Asian- and White-American clients in outpatient therapy
This study was the first to examine extensively the outcomes of Asian-American clients in mental health treatment. The research evaluated the short-term effects of outpatient individual psychotherapy. The focus on shortterm outcome was particularly appropriate in view of earlier utilization studies that have consistently found higher premature termination rates and shorter treatment stays for Asian clients relative to White clients. The study use…
