Designing for social impact
Our research, part of a larger study on exercise and well-being, focuses on the use of interactive artefacts in public spaces. Our findings suggest that many people have concerns about exercising in public due to inhibitions, insecurities, and social anxiety, which can affect behaviour in this context. Both well-being and physical mobility—the desired outcome—can be improved by new opportunities for activity, especially after the COVID-19 pandemi…
Well‐supervised, highly motivated, and healthy? Using latent class analysis and structural equation modelling to study doctoral candidates' health satisfaction
More and more empirical studies address doctoral candidates' health. Yet, the mechanisms linking supervision and doctoral candidates' health often remain unclear. We start to fill this research gap with classifications of supervisors produced by latent class analysis, which were introduced into structural equation models with motivation towards the dissertation research as a mediator to predict doctoral candidates' health satisfaction. We used da…
Social Inequality in Dropout from Higher Education in Germany. Towards Combining the Student Integration Model and Rational Choice Theory
Students from a lower socioeconomic background have a higher risk of dropping out of higher education. The underlying mechanisms of this association between socioeconomic background and higher education dropout are not well understood. Previous research in higher education has followed Tinto’s model of academic and social integration to explain dropout but has largely neglected social inequality therein. In contrast, social stratification researc…
A study of 25 years of publication outputs in the German academic profession
In the weak evaluation state of Germany, full professors are involved in the traditional social governance partnership between the state, and the self-governing higher education institutions (HEI) and disciplinary associations. Literature suggests that formal and informal governance could trigger changes in academics’ publication behavior by valorizing certain publication outputs. In the article, secondary data from three surveys (1992, 2007 and …
Resources, norms, and dropout intentions of migrant students in Germany
This study focuses exclusively on migrant students in German higher education and examines the relationship between their social networks, social capital, and dropout intention. We identify two different forms of social capital – resources and norms – that students derive from their networks, and are related to their educational outcomes. These two forms of social capital also correspond with the two well-established arguments for explaining immi…

Aspirations and Job Success of Highly Qualified Second Generation Iranians in Germany
This study pioneers the quantitative research of second generation Iranian graduates in Germany. Second generation immigrants in Germany, immigrants raised in Germany with at least one parent born abroad, are relevant as they are a crucial part of German society. Second generation immigrants in general as well as Iranians in particular are assumed to have high extrinsic aspirations. But a dataset big enough to study the employment situation of se…
The geography of the clinic
Clareview Community Health Centre (CHC) is a fortified primary health care facility in crisis. Gang violence, functional inefficiency and antagonistic patient/health worker relations threaten the staff's safety and biomedical roles. ‘Space’ is used here as theoretical lens to understand how these problems are spatially constructed, and how spatial structuring is used as a strategic resource at this biomedical boundary. Principles of modern space …

ACCORDING TO HENRY GIROUX, AN EFFECTIVE MULTICULTURAL PEDAgogy motivates students to engage diverse voices and perspectives without lapsing into a homogenized brand of American pluralism.' Introducing college students to Native American literature requires multiple points of reference to dislodge stereotypes of American Indians imparted by the dominant culture (from Hollywood films to New Age shamans) and to reflect the variety and complexity of …
Introduction-Native American Literatures
THE FOLLOWING ESSAYS DESCRIBE PEDAGOGICAL STRATEGIES USED IN A composition course in the Native American Studies Program at the University of California at Berkeley. This course functions as an introduction to contemporary Native American literature and as an occasion for students to hone their creative and critical skills as writers. A typical class consists of about thirty-four incoming students from heterogeneous backgrounds, European American…
