    This article questions the meaning of the category of ‘modern photography’ in Argentina from the 1930s through the 1960s, looking specifically at how it was used to refer to Grete Stern and Horacio Coppola's work from that period. The article shows that ‘modern’ referred to different and at times contradictory aesthetic and political dimensions of the photographic medium, and not to a single type of practice.
