  • Is Inflation Targeting destabilizing? Lessons from Latin America

    Open Access•Eva Libman•ARTICLE•Brazilian Journal of Political…•2022•References: 32

This paper argues that several aspects of the productive structure and the macroeconomic policies of Latin American countries, when combined with a Taylor Rule, may produce too much output volatility and a bias towards real exchange rate overvaluation. Relaying on a simple Aggregate Demand - Aggregate Supply model, we show that this is a likely outcome when: a) the real interest rate elasticity of demand is low; b) depreciations have strong contr…

  • A simple model of some possible long-run adverse effects of inflation targeting

Eva Libman, Emiliano Libman•ARTICLE•Review of Social Economy•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 42

In Latin America, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru, have been using Inflation Targeting for at least two decades, and although there were significant improvements in social indicators, macroeconomic results have been mixed. In particular, the real exchange rate has been much more volatile and growth was significantly slower in Brazil and Mexico. In accordance with these facts, we sketch a simple New Consensus open economy model with hyste…

  • Contractionary depreciations in Latin America during the 2000s

Open Access•M Montané, Eva Libman et al.•ARTICLE•Brazilian Journal of Political…•2021•References: 39

This paper explores the effects of currency depreciations on output for the main Latin American countries that have been using Inflation Targeting for almost two decades. We construct VAR models for Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru for the last two decades and we find that depreciations have short-run contractionary effects in Brazil and Mexico. We illustrate some of the policy implications of that finding by building a simple model, and …

  • Asymmetric monetary and exchange-rate policies in Latin American countries that use inflation targeting

    Eva Libman•ARTICLE•CEPAL review•2019•Cited by: 2

In recent decades, Latin American countries have adopted more flexible exchange-rate regimes and set inflation targets. Several authors argue that some countries' monetary and exchange-rate policies suffer from a procyclical bias, whereby central banks are reluctant to reduce interest rates when inflation falls, but are willing to increase them when inflation edges up. Therefore, the exchange rate tends to appreciate a lot and depreciate little. …

  • Do all individuals with sleep apnea suffer from daytime sleepiness? A preliminary investigation

    Open Access•Catherine S Fichten, Laura Creti et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health Psychology•2013•References: 39

We derived descriptive characteristics related to habitual sleep duration and insomnia for individuals newly diagnosed with sleep apnea/hypopnea syndrome and evaluated how sleep apnea/hypopnea syndrome, insomnia, depression, and sleep duration relate to sleepiness and fatigue. In total, 100 participants were divided into three sleep groups: short (<7 hours), long (≥8 hours), and midrange (7-7.9 hours). Polysomnography, insomnia, sleepiness, fatig…

  • Impaired Sleep in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Open Access•Laura Creti, Eva Libman et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health Psychology•2010•Cited by: 1•References: 31

The goal was to examine comparative efficacy of polysomnography, actigraphy, and self-report in evaluating the sleep/wake experience of individuals with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). Sleep parameters were evaluated by the three measurement modalities for the same night in 49 participants with CFS. Psychological and daytime functioning were measured by self-report. Results indicate that: (a) objectively measured nocturnal sleep time effectively …

  • Sleep Apnea and Psychological Functioning in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Open Access•Eva Libman, Laura Creti et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health Psychology•2009•Cited by: 2•References: 52

Objectives were to explore: (1) whether sleep apnea/hypopnea syndrome (SAHS) should be considered a chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) comorbidity, rather than a diagnostic exclusion criterion; and (2) to compare sleep/wake/ psychopathology in individuals with CFS, controls and another illness. Participants (CFS, SAHS, controls) completed questionnaires and were evaluated for SAHS; 68 percent were subsequently diagnosed with SAHS. CFS participants wi…

  • Behavioral sex therapy

William Brender, Eva Libman et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sex Research•1983•References: 1

In this study the efficacy of behavioral sex therapy provided to 21 couples by experienced clinicians in a clinical setting was examined. Pre‐treatment test‐retest reliability (3 months) on measures of sexual and marital functioning was obtained as well as immediate and 8‐month posttreatment changes. Findings at each stage were compared with results from a demographically comparable group of 17 well‐adjusted couples. Substantial improvements in t…
