EnufSnuff.TXT-FirstResponder
Introduction First Responders are three times more likely to use smokeless tobacco than those in the general population and very few targeted cessation interventions are available. Methods The #EnufSnuff.TXT First Responder text-based intervention ( n = 30), which includes an optional reduction component and tailored text-messages for cessation, was administered alongside the Enough Snuff Intervention ( n = 30), which includes a cessation booklet…
Text‐messaging e‐cigarette cessation intervention for young adults in rural areas
BACKGROUND: Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS) use is disproportionately high among young adults (YAs) in rural US communities, where cessation support is limited. The REVIVE (Rural Vaping Free Intervention for Young Adults via Text Messaging) program was developed to address the unique cessation barriers experienced in these settings. The objectives of this study were to examine the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy o…
Prevalence and predictors of chronic disease among rural and medically underserved populations using smokeless tobacco
Introduction: Smokeless tobacco (SLT) is significant public health problem in the U.S. and is associated with chronic diseases, which includes both physical and mental health conditions. Inequities in use exist as rural and other medically underserved populations use SLT more than that of the general population. Our study examined prevalence of chronic disease and identified associated risk factors among rural and medically underserved population…
Intersecting Risk
BACKGROUND: Extreme heat has a direct impact on health and can exacerbate substance use. Rural communities are at high risk given higher rates of hospitalizations for heat related illness and the disproportionate effects of substance use. This commentary explores the connection between heat and substance in rural communities and proposes recommendations within the span of policy, research and practice that can be tailored to fit the local rural c…
Rural–urban differences in smoking quit ratios and cessation‐related factors
PURPOSE: There are significant rural/urban disparities that exist in cancer and chronic disease morbidity and mortality, many of which are attributed to increased tobacco use prevalence in rural populations compared to urban. Understanding differences in rural and urban tobacco use patterns is key to developing targeted interventions. METHODS: Using nationally representative data from Wave 5 of the Population Assessment of Tobacco Use and Health …

Navigating Nonessential Research Trials During Covid‐19
The COVID-19 epidemic has threatened nonessential clinical trial research across the country. Now many researchers are being forced to either suspend research indefinitely, or redesign trials to conduct remote research functions from recruitment and enrollment to intervention delivery and follow-up. Moving to remote clinical trials is not without its challenges, especially for studies that are well underway. At the same time, the COVID-19 crisis …

Improving the Health of Public Housing Residents Through a Housing Authority and Nursing School Partnership
The connection between health and housing is well-established. People who are precariously housed have worse health than those who have stable housing arrangements.- Persons moving into public housing have a higher illness burden than the general population, and public housing residents engage in less healthy behaviors, which contribute to public housing residents having poorer health than persons living in other housing situations. Public housin…
Quality of Life and Impact of Cancer
PURPOSE: People living in rural areas experience greater health disparities than their nonrural counterparts, but little is known about the association between rural status and quality of life (QOL) in non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) survivors. We compared self-reported quality of life and impact of cancer in rural and nonrural NHL survivors. METHODS: This study is a secondary analysis of 566 NHL cancer survivors recruited from cancer registries at …

The Impact of Smoking and Multiple Health Behaviors on All-Cause Mortality
Four common health risk behaviors have the greatest impact on all-cause mortality risk, but studies are needed with larger samples and the appropriate age range for cigarette smokers. We examined the impact of smoking in the context of multiple health behaviors on all-cause mortality using a nationally representative sample of adults aged 30 and older in the United States. National Health Interview Survey data from 1997 to 2005 were linked to the…

Studying depression among Arab adolescents
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the methodology for research examining depression severity, depression sigma, and attitudes toward seeking professional help for depression among Jordanian adolescents aged 12 to 17 years. Because this was a novel area of research in the Arab countries generally, and Jordan specifically, we aimed to (a) assess the feasibility of collaboration with recruitment sites, (b) evaluate the sampling method and re…
Association between felt ambivalence and the desire to quit waterpipe use among college students
College waterpipe tobacco smokers who feel more ambivalence, that is, conflicted about its use, may have a stronger desire to quit. Using baseline survey data of 315 college waterpipe smokers, we examined this relationship. While frequency of feeling ambivalence was low, greater ambivalence was related with desire to quit ( r = .46, p < .001). This relationship remained significant after accounting for several correlates of desire to quit (e.g. p…
