  • Childhood maltreatment and the risk of impaired glucose metabolism or type 2 diabetes in young adults

    Open Access•Sonya S Deschêne, Finiki Nearchou et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health Psychology•2025•References: 48

We examined the associations between childhood maltreatment and the risk of impaired glucose metabolism (IGM) or type 2 diabetes (T2D) in young adults aged 18-35. Participants ( N = 8506) from the Lifelines Cohort Study without IGM or diabetes at baseline (2007-2013) were included. Childhood maltreatment was assessed by the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ) and incident IGM/T2D was assessed by haemoglobin A 1c levels (≥5.7%) in 2014-2017. Ther…

  • Is the Association Between Depressive Symptoms and Glucose Metabolism Bidirectional? Evidence From the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing

Panayotes Demakakos, Paola Zaninotto et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•2014

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether the prospective association between depressive symptoms and glucose metabolism is bidirectional. METHODS: We used a national sample of 4238 community-dwelling individuals 50 years or older from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing. Participants were categorized into normoglycemic, impaired glucose metabolism (IGM), and undiagnosed and diagnosed diabetes using glycated hemoglobin and self-reported doctor diagnosis…

  • Effects of gender, age, and diabetes duration on dietary self-care in adolescents with type 1 diabetes

Open Access•Stephanie Austin, Caroline Senécal et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health Psychology•2011•Cited by: 5•References: 43

This study tests a model derived from Self-Determination Theory (SDT) (Deci and Ryan, 2000) to explain the mechanisms by which non-modifiable factors influence dietary self-care in adolescents with type 1 diabetes ( n = 289). SEM analyses adjusted for HbA1c levels revealed that longer diabetes duration and female gender were indicative of poorer dietary self-care. This effect was mediated by contextual and motivational factors as posited by SDT. …
