“ Recuerdos de Mi Abuelo ”
This health communication edutainment project addresses racial disparities in Alzheimer's and dementia related diseases (ADRD). Studies show that Hispanics/Latinos have a 50% greater risk of ADRD, compared to non-Hispanic whites, but make up a fraction of the research participants. APP's goals are to recruit these communities into life-saving research and provide these communities with much needed information about aging brain health. This novel …
Emotion regulation strategies to improve outcomes in family caregivers of people with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias
Interventions for family caregivers of individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD) incorporate diverse elements, but drivers of success are unclear. Emotion regulation is vital for adaptive functioning. This systematic review explores how training in emotion regulation strategies affects intervention effectiveness. We hypothesized that the inclusion of adaptive strategies like cognitive reappraisal would be associated with s…
The case for screening for diabetes distress, depression, and anxiety
Our goal was to determine the prevalence of anxiety and depression in a sample of U.S. military veterans with type 2 diabetes and elevated diabetes distress (DD). Cross-sectional analyses were conducted. The association between DD and anxiety and depression was assessed with logistic regression. Almost 80% of persons with elevated DD had clinically significant anxiety or depression symptoms. The odds of depression and anxiety increased with DD se…
Compassionate Touch ® Delivered by Long-term Care Staff for Residents with Dementia
Limited evidence supports the use of touch or massage for people with dementia. Interventions incorporating a person-centered approach to touch delivered by staff may benefit residents with dementia and staff in long-term care settings. The Compassionate Touch® (CT) program provides protocol-based, skilled human touch and compassionate presence. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore experiences and perspectives of staff who provide…
Fall Worry Restricts Social Engagement in Older Adults
Objective: To examine cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between (a) activity-limiting fall worry (ALW) and (b) self-reported health-related restrictions and social engagement among older adults. Method : The National Health and Aging Trends Study Waves 5 (T1) and 6 (T2) provided data ( n = 6,279). Binary and multinomial logistic regression models were used to examine association of T2 social engagement restrictions with T2 fall worry …
Coping mediates the relationship between disease severity and illness intrusiveness among chronically ill patients
Reducing perceptions of illness intrusiveness may improve quality of life and mental health among patients with cardiopulmonary disease. To better understand relationships between coping style, locus of control, perceived illness intrusiveness, and disease severity, we analyzed data from 227 older Veterans with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or congestive heart failure. Regressions revealed illness intrusiveness to be associated with young…
Utilization of Psychiatric Services by Postpartum Women in a Predominantly Minority, Low-Socioeconomic-Status, Urban Population
Mental Health Service Use Among Depressed, Low-Income Homebound Middle-Aged and Older Adults
The need to improve low-income homebound older adults' access to psychotherapy was clearly evident
Psychological Distress Among Religious Nonbelievers
Use of Psychotherapy by Rural and Urban Veterans
PURPOSE: To examine whether differences exist between rural and urban veterans in terms of initiation of psychotherapy, delay in time from diagnosis to treatment, and dose of psychotherapy sessions. METHODS: Using a longitudinal cohort of veterans obtained from national Veterans Affairs databases (October 2003 through September 2004), we extracted veterans with a new diagnosis of depression, anxiety, or posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) (n = 4…
Predicting Quality of Life in Veterans with Heart Failure
This study focused on the relative contribution of heart failure (HF) disease severity, depression, and comorbid anxiety to quality of life for 96 ambulatory HF veterans (48 with and 48 without depressive symptoms). Primary analyses sought to predict HF quality of life using constructs including depression symptoms, comorbid anxiety symptoms, HF severity, medical-illness burden, and demographic factors. Multiple regression procedures found 3 sign…
