  • E-cigarette puff topography instruction to enhance switching among COPD patients who smoke

    Open Access•Eleanor L S Leavens, Theodore L Wagener et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2025

Introduction Patients suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) who smoke often face significant challenges when attempting to quit. However, switching to less harmful alternatives such as electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) may help mitigate tobacco-related health outcomes. Training COPD patients who smoke to adjust their puffing topography could enhance nicotine delivery and satisfaction, thereby facilitating their transition…

  • Rural–Urban Disparities in Health Access Factors Over Time: Implications for Cancer Prevention and Health Equity in the Midwest

Open Access•Jordan Baker, Hope Krebill et al.•ARTICLE•Health Equity•2022

Purpose: Population-level environmental and socioeconomic factors may influence cancer burden within communities, particularly in rural and urban areas that may be differentially impacted by factors related to health care access. Methods: The University of Kansas (KU) Cancer Center serves a geographically large diverse region with 75% of its 123 counties classified as rural. Using County Health Rankings data and joinpoint regression, we examined …

  • An application in identifying high-risk populations in alternative tobacco product use utilizing logistic regression and Cart: A heuristic comparison

Open Access•Yang Lei, Nicole L Nollen et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2015

This study suggests that the non-parametric CART model is parsimonious, potentially easier to interpret, and provides additional information in identifying the subgroups at high risk of ATP use among cigarette smokers

  • Physical activity and academic achievement across the curriculum (A + Paac): Rationale and design of a 3-year, cluster-randomized trial

    Open Access•J E Donnelly, Jerry L Greene et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2013

    US NIH Clinical Trials, http://NCT01699295

  • Assessment of Depression among African American Light Smokers

Open Access•Carla J Berg, Lisa Sanderson Cox et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health Psychology•2012•Cited by: 2•References: 44

Given the relationship between depression and smoking, we compared the two-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-2) and 10-item Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CESD-10) in assessing depressive symptoms among African American light smokers in a clinical trial of bupropion. Of 539 participants, 21.3 percent reported significant depressive symptoms on the PHQ-2, 31.0 percent screened positive per CESD-10, 36.8 percent reported …

  • Engaging diverse underserved communities to bridge the mammography divide

Open Access•Kimberly K Engelman, Ana Paula Cupertino et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2011

This highly innovative project will be guided and initiated by AI/AN and Latina community members and will test the practical application of emerging behavioral theory among minority persons living in rural communities

  • Physical Activity Across the Curriculum (Paac): A randomized controlled trial to promote physical activity and diminish overweight and obesity in elementary school children

    Open Access•J E Donnelly, Jerry L Greene et al.•ARTICLE•Preventive Medicine•2009

  • Detecting and Documenting Intimate Partner Violence: An Intake Form Question Is Not Enough

Open Access•Kimber Paschall Richter, Zita Joy Surprenant et al.•ARTICLE•Violence Against Women•2003

The objective of this research was to assess rates of clinician screening for intimate partner violence (IPV) and to evaluate documentation of cases. The authors reviewed 527 charts of women aged 18 to 65 seen in the emergency department of an academic medical center. Of the 527 charts reviewed, 150 charts (29%) indicated patients were screened; 23 patients (15%) were positive for IPV. Prevalence of lifetime exposure to IPV was 4.4%, and prevalen…
