  • The Developmental Trajectory of Nonadjacent Dependency Learning

Open Access•Rebecca L Gomez, Rebecca Gomez et al.•ARTICLE•Infancy•2005

We investigated the developmental trajectory of nonadjacent dependency learning in an artificial language. Infants were exposed to 1 of 2 artificial languages with utterances of the form [aXc or bXd] (Grammar 1) or [aXd or bXc] (Grammar 2). In both languages, the grammaticality of an utterance depended on the relation between the 1 st and 3rd elements, whereas the intervening element varied freely. High variability of the middle element is known …

  • Variability and Detection of Invariant Structure

    Open Access•Rebecca L Gomez•ARTICLE•Psychological Science•2002

Two experiments investigated learning of nonadjacent dependencies by adults and 18-month-olds. Each learner was exposed to three-element strings (e.g., pel-kicey-jic) produced by one of two artificial languages. Both languages contained the same adjacent dependencies, so learners could distinguish the languages only by acquiring dependencies between the first and third elements (the nonadjacent dependencies). The size of the pool from which the m…

  • Artificial grammar learning by 1-year-olds leads to specific and abstract knowledge

  • Assessing Beliefs about 'Environmental Illness/Multiple Chemical Sensitivity

    Open Access•Rebecca L Gomez, Roger W Schvaneveldt et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health Psychology•1996•Cited by: 2•References: 45

Knowledge representation was used to characterize beliefs in patients with Environmental Illness/Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (EI/MCS). EI/MCS patients, allergy and asthma patients, doctors and controls made relatedness judgments on concepts relevant to EI/MCS. Associative networks showed that EI/MCS patients viewed these concepts differently from others. Multiple chemical exposure was central in EI/ MCS networks, with many links to every other …
