  • Committing to Continuity

Open Access•Emily Pingel, Alexandra Llovet et al.•ARTICLE•Health Education & Behavior•2021

Decreased engagement in preventive services, including vaccination, during the COVID-19 pandemic represents a grave threat to global health. We use the case of the Bom Retiro Public Health Clinic in São Paulo, Brazil, to underscore how continuity of care is not only feasible, but a crucial part of health as a human right. The long-standing relationship between the clinic and neighborhood residents has facilitated ongoing management of physical an…

  • The dual contingencies of ethnoraciality

    Open Access•Abigail Sewell, Emily Pingel et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science Research•2020•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 99

Researchers often explore health (care) beliefs as a function of individual characteristics; yet, few consider the role of context in shaping both beliefs and the behaviors that are informed by them. As a sociopolitical construct, ethnoraciality provides a concerning source of bias in studies of health (care) beliefs because it inhabits both individual and contextual forms. This study examines whether the ethnoracial context of the residential ar…

  • Church hurt can be the worst hurt’

Emily Pingel, Emily S Pingel et al.•ARTICLE•Culture Health & Sexuality•2018

Black gay and bisexual men aged 15-29 are disproportionately represented among new cases of HIV in the USA. Researchers have argued that community-based prevention cannot succeed without the participation of faith-based organisations, particularly given the salience of religion and spirituality in the lives of young Black gay and bisexual men. Yet some Black churches may be hesitant to engage in HIV prevention efforts given their beliefs about sa…

Jose Bauermeister, Emily J Youatt et al.•ARTICLE•Behavioral Medicine•2017

Sexual minority women (SMW; i.e., women who identify their sexuality as lesbian, bisexual, or something other than heterosexual) report greater smoking behaviors than their heterosexual counterparts across all ages. We conducted a multivariable regression to examine the correlates of prior smoking cessation attempts and smoking cessation intentions in a sample of young SMW who smoke (N = 338; aged 18-24 years). Covariates included sociodemographi…

Multi‐sector participation was used to identify two structural‐level HIV/STI prevention interventions. We share best practices that might benefit other coalitions working with sexual and gender minorities

    Emily J Youatt, Michelle M Johns et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of LGBT Youth•2015•Referencias: 7

Smoking rates are higher among lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) individuals than among heterosexuals. These disparities are exacerbated during the transition from youth to young adulthood. The current study uses in-depth qualitative interviews to understand perceptions of LGBTQ smoking among LBQ-identified women (N=30, ages 18-24). Major themes identified include the belief that smoking was a way of overcoming stressors face…

  • PrEP Awareness and Perceived Barriers Among Single Young Men who have Sex with Men

Jose Bauermeister, Steven Meanley et al.•ARTICLE•Current HIV Research•2014

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) has the potential to help reduce new HIV infections among young men who have sex with men (YMSM). Using a cross-sectional survey of YMSM (N=1,507; ages 18-24), we gauged YMSM's PrEP awareness and PrEP-related beliefs regarding side effects, accessibility, and affordability. Overall, 27% of the sample had heard about PrEP; 1% reported ever using PrEP prior to sex. In a multivariate logistic regression, we found that…

Internet use provides a vital opportunity for sexual minority youth to learn about sexual desires and pursue partnerships otherwise publically stigmatized. Researchers, however, have portrayed the Internet as an inherently risky venue for HIV/STI transmission among young gay men (YGM). We therefore investigated how YGM use the Internet during adolescence and emerging adulthood. In the course of 34 in-depth, semi-structured interviews with a sampl…

  • LGBT Community, Social Network Characteristics, and Smoking Behaviors in Young Sexual Minority Women

    Open Access•Michelle M Johns, Emily Pingel et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Community…•2013•Citada por: 6•Referencias: 34

Smoking rates among young sexual minority women (YSMW) are disproportionately high as compared to heterosexual populations. While this disparity has commonly been attributed to the sexual minority stress process, little empirical work has explored what may protect YSMW from high rates of smoking. Using data (N = 471) from a cross‐sectional study designed to investigate YSMW's (age 18–24) smoking behaviors and correlates; we explore the relationsh…

  • Butch Tops and Femme Bottoms? Sexual Positioning, Sexual Decision Making, and Gender Roles Among Young Gay Men

Open Access•Michelle M Johns, Emily Pingel et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Men s Health•2012

Gender and power are theoretical constructs linked to discussions of sexual transmission of HIV/AIDS among heterosexual couples. Despite the fact that HIV rates are rising among young men who have sex with men in the United States, work examining the role of gender in sexual decision making of young men who have sex with men remains in its infancy. Through qualitative interviews with 34 young gay men (YGM), the authors seek to contribute to the l…

Few studies have investigated how mother and father support differ on predicting youths' sexual risk behavior. We therefore examined the influence of parental support on condom use trajectories and its correlates in a predominantly African American sample [(N=627; 53% female; M = 14.86 years (SD=. 64)] from adolescence to young adulthood. We used hierarchical growth curve modeling to examine the relationship between condom use, substance use, psy…

Invalid data may compromise data quality. We examined how decisions made to handle these data may affect the relationship between Internet use and HIV risk behaviors in a sample of young men who have sex with men (YMSM). We recorded 548 entries during the 3-month period and created six analytic groups (i.e., full sample, entries initially tagged as valid, suspicious entries, valid cases mislabeled as suspicious, fraudulent data, and total valid c…

Conceptualizations of safer sex practices among young gay men (YGM) are frequently structured around communication between partners and the subsequent utilization or absence of condoms in a sexual encounter. Drawing on a sample of 34 in-depth interviews with YGM, ages 18 to 24, we explore the ways in which conceptualizations and definitions of safer sex are discussed and enacted. Placing attention on their safer sex practices, we analyze the conv…

Open Access•Ricardo de la Espriella, Emily Pingel et al.•ARTICLE•Global Public Health•2010

The demobilisation of guerrillas and paramilitaries in Colombia, also known as irregular armed groups, has raised the question among mental health professionals as to whether ex-combatants who have had repeated exposure to stressful events might meet the requirements for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Upon arrival at a psychiatric clinic in Bogotá, 76 patients were evaluated by a group of mental health professionals with experience in this…
