Reflecting on the Father
The researchers examined childhood family structure, age, and race/ethnicity as correlates of paternal relationships using the Father Presence Questionnaire. The sample consisted of 788 adult women aged 18 to 88 years from ethnically diverse backgrounds. The most consistent finding was the effect of family structure on participants' evaluations of their paternal relationships. Father absence because of divorce or separation produced less favorabl…
Father Presence, Family Structure, and Feelings of Closeness to the Father Among Adult African American Children
Previous literature primarily defines father presence and absence in terms of the father's residence in the home. This definition may purport an exceedingly negative image of African American families. The present study, however, seeks to redefine father presence in the context of feelings of closeness to the father as well as frequency of father visitation. Results suggest that a considerable portion of African American nonresident fathers visit…
Factors affecting the link between physical discipline and child externalizing problems in Black and White families
We examined contextual factors that may affect the impact of physical discipline on later child behavior problems among high-risk Black and White families. We examined race, parental warmth, and early child problems as potential moderators of the discipline–behavior problem link. The sample included 442 White and Black children and their caregivers interviewed at ages 4, 6, and 8 years. Results indicated that physical discipline operated similarl…
Assessment of Depressive Symptomatology in Young Maltreated Children
The present study examined the characteristics of a self-report measure of depression in young maltreated children. Two samples, Foster Care (N= 197) and Clinic Referred (N= 107), of maltreated children between the ages of 3- and 7-years, were administered the Preschool Symptom Self-Report (PRESS). In addition, a subsample of the foster and all of the clinic children between the ages of 4- and 7-years responded to Harter's measure of Perceived Co…

An Examination of Measurement Characteristics and Factorial Validity of the Revised Conflict Tactics Scale
The present study investigated descriptive statistics for and factor validity of scores on the Revised Conflict Tactics Scale (CTS2) based on the responses of 295 high-risk postpartum women. The CTS2 yielded results for this sample similar to results obtained from a sample of college students in a previous study. Furthermore, confirmatory factor analytic results indicated that a five-factor model, specifying factors of Negotiation, Minor Psycholo…
Children and youth in foster care
Project Success
Project Success is a comprehensive, middle schoolprogramfor the early intervention of alcohol and otherdrug (ATOD) use by high-risk youth to reduce riskfactors and increase resiliency across environmental domains. Referred youth had high levels of ATOD use and risk, lowerself-esteem, more absences, and lower grades than normative peers. For 6 to 12 months, each cohort of students participated in a variety of individual and group interventions (e.…

Maximum Likelihood Estimation of Factor Structures of Anxiety Measures
This paper examines the construct generality of self-report measures of anxiety across male and female samples, and illustrates the use of confirmatory maximum likelihood techniques for examining factorial invariance. Factor structures for each of five anxiety inventories (state and trait forms of Spielberger's State-Trait Anxiety Inventory; Taylor's Manifest Anxiety Scale; two forms of Endler, Hunt and Rosenstein's S-R Inventory of Anxiousness) …
