  • Caregiver strain is strongly associated with health and family outcomes in military couples following traumatic brain injury in service members and veterans

    Open Access•Tracey A Brickell, Brian J Ivins et al.•ARTICLE•Quality of Life Research•2026

  • Intimate partner distress is strongly associated with worse warfighter brain health following mild traumatic brain injury

    Open Access•Tracey A Brickell, Brian J Ivins et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Trauma Theory…•2025

A range of clinically elevated IP HRQOL constructs emerged as long-term risk factors for chronic neurobehavioral symptoms in SMVs post-MTBI. More attention to the role that family distress has on poor warfighter recovery and return to duty following an MTBI is required. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2026 APA, all rights reserved)

  • A dyad approach to understanding relationship satisfaction and health outcomes in military couples following service member and veteran traumatic brain injury

    Open Access•Tracey A Brickell, Brian J Ivins et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2025

Relationship dissatisfaction was related to worse health and family outcomes, even when the other members of the dyad reported satisfaction in their relationship. A dual-goal, dyadic approach to TBI treatment that focuses on how individual, couple, and family factors interact will likely maximize service member recovery and return to duty, as well as outcomes for military families

  • Family caregivers of service members in United States Department ofDefense health care report impairment in longitudinal healthoutcomes

    Open Access•Tracey A Brickell, Louis M French et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Trauma Theory…•2024

Many caregivers of service members reported clinically elevated scores across HRQOL domains and the prevalence increased over 2 years. More services for caregivers in the Department of Defense may be helpful in reducing the trajectory of newly developed symptoms long term. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2025 APA, all rights reserved)

  • Low resilience is associated with worse health-related quality of life in caregivers of service members and veterans with traumatic brain injury

    Open Access•Tracey A Brickell, Megan M Wright et al.•ARTICLE•Quality of Life Research•2024

  • Health outcomes before and during the Covid-19 pandemic in caregivers of service members and veterans with traumatic brain injury

    Open Access•Tracey A Brickell, Megan M Wright et al.•ARTICLE•Quality of Life Research•2023

  • Relationship satisfaction among spouse caregivers of service members and veterans with comorbid mild traumatic brain injury and post‐traumatic stress disorder

    Open Access•Tracey A Brickell, Louis M French et al.•ARTICLE•Family Process•2022

This study examined relationship satisfaction and health‐related quality of life (HRQOL) among spouse caregivers assisting service members and veterans (SMV) with comorbid uncomplicated mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI) and post‐traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Spouse caregivers ( N = 205) completed the Couples Satisfaction Index (CSI), 12 HRQOL measures, and the Mayo‐Portland Adaptability Inventory 4 th Edition (MPAI‐4). T‐scores were classifi…

  • Aggression in Military Members With Mild Traumatic Brain Injury and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Is Associated With Intimate Partner Health-Related Quality of Life

    Open Access•Tracey A Brickell, Louis M French et al.•ARTICLE•Women s Health Issues•2022

  • Pain interference and health-related quality of life in caregivers of service members and veterans with traumatic brain injury and mental health comorbidity

    Open Access•Tracey A Brickell, Megan M Wright et al.•ARTICLE•Quality of Life Research•2022

  • Clinical utility of PTSD, resilience, sleep, and blast as risk factors to predict poor neurobehavioral functioning following traumatic brain injury

    Open Access•Rael T Lange, Louis M French et al.•ARTICLE•Quality of Life Research•2022

  • Unhealthy family functioning is associated with health-related quality of life among military spouse caregivers

    Open Access•Tracey A Brickell, Louis M French et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Trauma Theory…•2021

Caring for a SMV following TBI with comorbid mental health problems may have negative implications for their family functioning and the caregiver's HRQOL. Family-centered interventions could be beneficial for military families experiencing distress following SMV TBI and mental health comorbidity. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2022 APA, all rights reserved)

  • Resilience is associated with health-related quality of life in caregivers of service members and veterans following traumatic brain injury

    Open Access•Tracey A Brickell, Megan M Wright et al.•ARTICLE•Quality of Life Research•2020

  • Applying test operating characteristics to measures of exercise motivation

    Open Access•Tracey A Brickell, Rael T Lange et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Psychology•2010•References: 35

Physical activity programmes that include a motivational counselling component can be effective at increasing exercise participation. Reliable screening procedures could provide a cost effective method of identifying and channelling those ‘at risk’ for non‐participation into a motivational counselling intervention and increase participation and long‐term adherence. Traditional statistical methods have played an important step in developing measur…

  • Autonomy and Control

    Open Access•Tracey A Brickell, Nikos L D Chatzisarantis et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health Psychology•2006•Cited by: 2•References: 43

This study examined the utility of the theory of planned behaviour (TPB) along with additional constructs in predicting exercise, and explored the motivational antecedents of exercise intentions. Participants included 162 Canadian University College students (61% females). Measures of TPB, autonomous and controlling intention, perceived autonomy support and core autonomous intention were completed during phase 1 of data collection. Two and three …
