  • De-centring the psychology curriculum

    Open Access•Michalis Kontopodis, Marta Jackowska•ARTICLE•Theory & Psychology•2019

The psychology curriculum has close ties to the histories and cultural traditions of industrialised societies’ white middle-class populations, so it is unclear how it may reflect the interests and values of students from a variety of ethnic, racial, and socio-economic backgrounds in contemporary higher education settings. To address this question, we established an innovative research project of de-centring the psychology curriculum, so that BA s…

  • Associations between social isolation, loneliness, and objective physical activity in older men and women

Open Access•Stephanie Schrempft, Marta Jackowska et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2019

These findings suggest that greater social isolation in older men and women is related to reduced everyday objective physical activity and greater sedentary time. Differences in physical activity may contribute to the increased risk of ill-health and poor wellbeing associated with isolation

Open Access•Marta Jackowska, Reinhard Fuchs et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Psychology•2018•References: 52

Evidence on the relationship between stress reactivity and sleep is conflicting. One hundred and twenty middle‐aged men were exposed to the Trier Social Stress Test for Groups. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and the Perceived Stress Reactivity Scale were used to assess sle…

Open Access•Marta Jackowska, Jennie Brown et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health Psychology•2016•Cited by: 12•References: 49

This randomised controlled experiment tested whether a brief subjective well-being intervention would have favourable effects on cardiovascular and neuroendocrine function and on sleep. We compared 2 weeks of a gratitude intervention with an active control (everyday events reporting) and no treatment conditions in 119 young women. The treatment elicited increases in hedonic well-being, optimism and sleep quality along with decreases in diastolic …

  • Psychosocial Factors and Sleep Efficiency

Marta Jackowska, Samantha Dockray et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•2011

OBJECTIVES: Self-reported sleep efficiency may not precisely reflect objective sleep patterns. We assessed whether psychosocial factors and affective responses are associated with discrepancies between subjective reports and objective measures of sleep efficiency. METHODS: Participants were 199 working women aged 20 to 61 years. Standardized questionnaires were used to assess psychosocial characteristics and affect that included work stress, soci…
