  • Can Family Motivation Enhance Men’s Uptake of Cascade Screening for Familial BRCA1/2 Mutations

Open Access•Giulia Ongaro, Serena Petrocchi et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Men s Health•2025

Pathogenic variants in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes increase the relative and absolute risks of developing breast, ovarian, prostate, and pancreatic cancer. Clinical guidelines recommend cascade screening (CS) to enhance the identification of at-risk relatives. Despite the benefits of CS in facilitating access to appropriate cancer screening and risk-reduction strategies, CS uptake remains relatively low, particularly among at-risk men. Men’s decisi…

  • Exploring the Relationships Between Extreme Levels of Trust on Young People’s View of the Future

Open Access•Serena Petrocchi, Giovanni Angelini et al.•ARTICLE•Basic and Applied Social Psychology•2025

The study explored the associations between extreme levels of trust and young people’s pessimistic view of the future. The participants were 772 Italian university students (Male, 21%; range 18–57; Mage=21.6 years, SD = 5.3 years). Findings supported the expected negative linear associations between trust beliefs and pessimism. However, findings further demonstrated that very high and very low trust were associated with higher pessimism than inte…

  • “What does not kill you… mutates and tries again.” A study on personality determinants of post-traumatic growth during the Covid-19 pandemic

Open Access•Serena Petrocchi, Sara Angela Pellegrino et al.•ARTICLE•Current Psychology•2023

Introduction . The COVID-19 pandemic was recognized as a collective trauma and as a major threat to mental health. Recent literature focused on the stress symptomatology or post-traumatic stress disorder associated to the COVID-19 exposure. The concept that people have a natural inclination toward growth, even under stressful and threatening events, gathered less attention. Previous research has analyzed antecedents of post-traumatic growth (PTG)…

  • The interplay between risk and protective factors during the initial height of the Covid-19 crisis in Italy

Open Access•Serena Petrocchi, Paola Iannello et al.•ARTICLE•Current Psychology•2022

  • Parental Knowledge of Children’s Screen Time

Open Access•Laura Marciano, Serena Petrocchi et al.•ARTICLE•Communication Research•2022

The ubiquity of media in children’s lives makes it increasingly difficult for parents to keep track of their children’s screen time, leading to considerable discrepancies in parent- and child-report. In the present study, we aimed to examine if and how these discrepancies can be explained by parent-child communication, in terms of children’s self-disclosure, secrecy, and parental solicitation, and to what extend the quality of the parent-child re…

  • The Effect of Sleep–Wake Routines on the Negative Emotional States and Aggressive Behaviors in Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) during the Covid-19 Outbreak

Open Access•A Levante, Serena Petrocchi et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

Disruption in routine may be related to experiencing negative emotional states and to aggressive behaviors in individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The lockdown because of COVID-19 contributed to the disruption of individuals’ routines, including the sleep−wake cycle. The current study tested a relationship between the adherence to the sleep−wake routine and aggressive behaviors via the mediation role of negative emotional states (i.e.…

  • Influence of Empathy Disposition and Risk Perception on the Psychological Impact of Lockdown During the Coronavirus Disease Pandemic Outbreak

Open Access•Nicola Grignoli, Serena Petrocchi et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2021

During the current COVID-19 pandemic, and especially in the absence of availability of an effective treatment or a vaccine, the main health measure is neither chemical nor biological, but behavioral. To reduce the exponential growth of infections due to the new coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) and the resulting overburdening of the healthcare system, many European Countries, parts of the US and Switzerland gradually implemented measures of quarantine and…

  • Maternal Psychological Distress and Children’s Internalizing/Externalizing Problems during the Covid-19 Pandemic

    Open Access•Federica Bianco, A Levante et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

In order to explore the psychological impact of the COVID-19 outbreak on the caregiver–child relationship, we investigated the interplay among COVID-19 exposure and children’s internalizing/externalizing problems during the Italian lockdown, hypothesizing a mediation effect played by maternal distress. Additionally, we included maternal reflective functioning (i.e., hypermentalization) as a moderator factor among this interplay. A total of 305 It…

  • The Relationship between Social Anxiety, Smartphone Use, Dispositional Trust, and Problematic Smartphone Use

Open Access•Anna Maria Annoni, Serena Petrocchi et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

Heavy smartphone users as well as socially anxious individuals, with the tendency of trusting others, are more at risk of PSU, which can be explained by their preference and search for online connections

  • Maternal Distress/Coping and Children's Adaptive Behaviors During the Covid-19 Lockdown

Open Access•Serena Petrocchi, A Levante et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2020

The present study focused on the psychological impact that the lockdown due to coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) had on families in Italy. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Italian government imposed a strict lockdown for all citizens. People were forced to stay at home, and the length of the lockdown was uncertain. Previous studies analyzed the impact of social distance measures on individuals' mental health, whereas few studies have examined th…

  • Theory of Mind as a Mediator Between Emotional Trust Beliefs and Interpersonal Communication Competence in a Group of Young Adults

Open Access•Serena Petrocchi, Chiara Filipponi et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•2020

Research has provided direct and indirect evidence of associations between trust beliefs and social-perceptual theory of mind (ToM) and between social-perceptual ToM and interpersonal communication competence during childhood and adolescence. This research (a) developed a scale for evaluating trust beliefs in young Italian adults (Study 1) and (b) examined how social-perceptual ToM mediates the relationship between emotional trust beliefs and int…

  • Measurement invariance of the Short Wake Forest Physician Trust Scale and of the Health Empowerment Scale in German and French women

Open Access•Serena Petrocchi, Nanon Labrie et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health Psychology•2020•References: 52

Measurement invariance is a crucial prerequisite to carry out cross-cultural research and to provide knowledge that enables culturally diverse patients to feel comfortable with their health providers. Although trust in doctors and health empowerment are widely studied, no previous research has examined their measurement invariance. The Short Wake Forest Physician Trust scale and the Health Empowerment scale were administered online. Participants …

This research aimed to develop the children's trust in general social workers (CTGSW) scale. Psychometric properties, structural validity, construct, and concurrent validity of the scale were evaluated. Both linear and quadratic patterns between children's trust beliefs in social workers and their engagement with social workers were examined. A sample of 112 Italian vulnerable children ( M = 11.4 years, SD = 1 month) were administered the Italian…
