Predictors of enrollment and cessation outcomes in a telehealth opt-out tobacco treatment program
This study explores predictors of reach, enrollment, and smoking outcomes among patients referred to a telehealth-pharmacy assisted tobacco treatment program (TTP). Between May 2021 and December 2022, 35 756 adult patients from 43 oncology clinics were screened for cigarette use, and 3 319 current smokers were referred to the TTP. Gain-Framed Text Messages and Nicotine Replacement Therapy for Smoking Cessation Among Lung Cancer Screening Patients
People who undergo lung cancer screening (LCS) and continue to smoke are at risk for negative clinical outcomes and lowered survival and need effective smoking cessation interventions. This pilot study tested an 8-week intervention for smoking cessation after LCS. The participants ( N = 40) were randomized to the intervention group (combination nicotine replacement therapy [NRT] plus gain-framed text messaging for 8 weeks) or the control group (s…

Optimizing the Implementation of Tobacco Treatment for People with HIV
People with HIV (PWH) have higher rates of tobacco use compared to their societal counterparts and are disproportionately affected by tobacco-related morbidity and mortality. A needs assessment was conducted to assess provider beliefs and opinions on tobacco treatment barriers and treatment approaches. The results highlighted a disconnect between the known importance of quitting smoking and barriers in linking patients to treatment, such as lack …
Assessing multiple features of partner support for smoking cessation in dual-smoker couples
The purpose of this study was to evaluate a new scale to measure multiple aspects of partner support for quitting smoking relevant to dual-smoker couples, called the Partner Support for Quitting Scale. The best model fit ( N = 238 individuals in 119 couples) considers the frequency of, confidence in, and perceived usefulness of partner support behaviors. Path analysis revealed that the Partner Support for Quitting Scale factors were uniquely pred…
Validation of a scale for the assessment of food cravings among smokers
The Virginia Slims identity crisis
Tobacco advertisers initially created distinct female brands with aspirational images; continued appeal to young women was critical for long term growth. The need for established brands to evolve to maintain relevance to young women creates an opportunity for tobacco counter-marketing, which should undermine tobacco brand imagery and promote aspirational smoke-free lifestyle images. Young women age 18-24 are extremely valuable to the tobacco indu…
