Barriers and facilitators to implementing and sustaining campus food insecurity initiatives
This study explored the barriers and facilitators to the successful implementation and sustainment of food insecurity initiatives on college campuses. Respondents (n = 65) included faculty, staff, administrators, and student leaders at higher education institutions in 28 states. Through an online survey, respondents reported experiencing multiple barriers (mean 3.7, SD 1.7) when implementing food insecurity initiatives. The three most commonly re…
Analyzing spillovers from food, energy and water conservation behaviors using insights from systems perspective
Spillover effects are considered important in evaluating the impacts of food, energy and water (FEW) conservation behaviors for limiting global greenhouse gas emissions and climate change. Failure to account for all possible spillovers, or indirect and unintended results of an intervention, not only obscures valuable information pertaining to the dynamic interactions across domains but also results in biased estimates. In this study, we first sys…

Teachers' Perceptions and Attitudes Toward Breakfast in the Classroom
BACKGROUND: Teacher resistance is sometimes cited as a barrier to implementing Breakfast in the Classroom (BIC), an approach to school breakfast in which students eat at their desks after the school day has begun. Given their role in serving breakfast with BIC, teacher perceptions may be critical in implementing an effective BIC program. METHODS: K-5 teachers (N = 249) in an urban, low-income school district completed an online survey that assess…

Improving Coastal Storm Evacuation Messages
Evacuation before severe coastal storms is a critical tool for keeping coastal residents safe. Effective messaging of evacuations could help save lives, but there is little evidence-based guidance on the advantages or disadvantages of specific messaging. Ideally, evacuation messages would convince those most at risk to evacuate and those who do not need to evacuate to stay in their homes. Using an online survey of 1716 coastal residents in Connec…

When Good Food Goes Bad
In September 2006, an unprecedented nationwide outbreak of fresh spinach contaminated with Escherichia coli O157:H7 was communicated to the American public through press releases from the Food and Drug Administration. The potential for severe and fatal illness from consuming this spinach required effective communication by media outlets. Television network news coverage (ABC, CBS, and NBC morning and evening news shows) was examined for quantity,…
Risk perceptions and their relation to risk behavior
BACKGROUND: Because risk perceptions can affect protective behavior and protective behavior can affect risk perceptions, the relations between these 2 constructs are complex and incorrect tests often lead to invalid conclusions. PURPOSE: To discuss and carry out appropriate tests of 3 easily confused hypotheses: (a). the behavior motivation hypothesis (perceptions of personal risk cause people to take protective action), (b). the risk reappraisal…
