  • Capturing complexity: Forests, decision-making and climate change mitigation action

    Open Access•Maartje J Klapwijk, Johanna Boberg et al.•ARTICLE•Global Environmental Change•2018•Cited by: 8•References: 6

Managed forests can play an important role in climate change mitigation due to their capacity to sequester carbon. However, it has proven difficult to harness their full potential for climate change mitigation. Managed forests are often referred to as socio-ecological systems as the human dimension is an integral part of the system. When attempting to change systems that are influenced by factors such as collective knowledge, social organization,…

  • Pacific Crossings: Oceania and the Circulation of Literature in the 19th Century

    Open Access•Jock Macleod, David Ellison•ARTICLE•Literature Compass•2014

One consequence of increased European colonialism in the Pacific in the 19th century was a major growth in the circulation of literature, first from the colonial homelands and later from the colonies as well. This article introduces a cluster of three articles on the circulation of literature in the Pacific in the 19th century. It suggests that the elements that make up the ‘communications circuit’ for any publication change according to time, pl…

  • Reforming the EU approach to Lulucf and the climate policy framework

    Open Access•David Ellison, Mattias Lundblad et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Science & Policy•2014•Cited by: 4

We focus on recent progress in reforming the role of forests and other land use in the EU climate policy framework. EU inclusion of LULUCF (Land Use, Land-Use Change and Forestry) in the climate policy framework still lags international developments, remaining at odds even with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change's (UNFCCC) Kyoto framework. Though the EU has made some important changes that eclipse even the UNFCCC framework—…

  • Is the Water Footprint an Appropriate Tool for Forestry and Forest Products: The Fennoscandian Case

    Open Access•Samuli Launiainen, Martyn N Futter et al.•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2014•Cited by: 1•References: 57

The water footprint by the Water Footprint Network (WF) is an ambitious tool for measuring human appropriation and promoting sustainable use of fresh water. Using recent case studies and examples from water-abundant Fennoscandia, we consider whether it is an appropriate tool for evaluating the water use of forestry and forest-based products. We show that aggregating catchment level water consumption over a product life cycle does not consider fre…

    David Ellison•ARTICLE•Textual Practice•2012

Written in the aftermath of the Staplehurst rail disaster, Dickens's ghost story 'The Signalman' is often read for its uncanny insights into what would later come to be known as trauma theory. This paper revisits that text - in its focus on retrospection, belatedness, repetition and the disarticulation of event from consciousness - to consider the role of other, arguably less intense, but still traumatising experiences. For example, Dickens's fra…

    Open Access•David Ellison•ARTICLE•Cultural Studies Review•2012

This article examines the production and reception of incidental machine noise, specifically the variably registered sounds emanating from automata in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The argument proposed here is that the audience for automata performances demonstrated a capacity to screen out mechanical noise that may have otherwise interfered with the narrative theatricality of their display. In this regard the audience may be said to …

  • Carbon accounting and the climate politics of forestry

    Open Access•David Ellison, Mattias Lundblad et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Science & Policy•2011•Cited by: 6

Many proposals have been made for the more successful inclusion of LULUCF (Land Use, Land Use Change and Forestry) in the Kyoto framework. Though the positions of individual states or the goal of avoided deforestation guide many approaches, our model sets cost-effective strategies for climate change mitigation and the efficient and balanced use of forest resources at its center. Current approaches to forest resource-based carbon accounting consid…

  • A Reader's Guide to Proust's 'In Search of Lost Time'

    Open Access•David Ellison, David R Ellison•BOOK•Reader's Guide to Proust's 'in…•2010

Proust's 'A la recherche du temps perdu' (In Search of Lost Time) is many things at once: a novel of education, a portrait of French society during the Third Republic, a masterful psychological analysis of love, a reflection on homosexuality, an essay in moral and aesthetic theory, and, above all, one of the great literary achievements of the twentieth century. This Reader's Guide analyses each volume of the 'Recherche' in order and in detail. Wi…

  • Aesthetic Experience, Transitional Objects and the Third Space: The Fusion of Audience and Aesthetic Objects in the Performing Arts

    Open Access•Ian Woodward, David Ellison•ARTICLE•Thesis Eleven•2010•References: 4

Aesthetic experience has been relativized and marginalized by recent social and cultural theory. As less attention has been paid to understanding the nature of aesthetic experience than mapping the distributed social correlates of tastes, its transformative potential and capacity to animate actors' imaginations and actions goes unexplored. In this paper we draw upon a large number of in-depth interviews with performing arts audiences around Austr…

  • Divide and Conquer: The European Union Enlargement's Successful Conclusion?1

    Open Access•David Ellison, David L Ellison•ARTICLE•International Studies Review•2006•Cited by: 2•References: 25

What drives enlargement of the European Union is a topic of great debate and is comparatively undertheorized. This fact is surprising given the degree of long-term membership growth in the European Union. Begun in 1957 as a geographically tight-knit group of six countries (France, Germany, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg), the European Union has now progressively expanded to a group of 25 countries and will likely reach 27 member …
