An Examination of US Covid-19 Vaccine Distribution in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and New York
COVID-19 quickly spread across the United States (US) while communications and policies at all government levels suffered from inconsistency, misinformation, and lack of coordination. In order to explain the discrepancy between availability and population uptake, a case study was conducted analyzing vaccine rollout plans, social media, and Health Officer/Other Key Informant interviews in New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania. Breast cancer is number one in incidence and sixth in mortality among all cancers of women in China. Social capital as a mediating factor in emergency preparedness and concerns about terrorism
The purpose of this study was to investigate how social capital might be instrumental in mediating concerns about terrorism and promoting appropriate responses for emergency preparedness. Results are presented from a random‐digit dialed survey of a metropolitan area measuring individual characteristics as well as community‐level characteristics as possible predictors of the practice of emergency preparedness and concerns about future terrorism. R…
Patterns of Assault in a Sample of Recent Rape Victims
Intimate partner assault patterns are not well understood in recent rape victims. In an effort to examine these patterns, 47 rape victims seeking care from a forensic medical examination facility were sampled across three assessment points (6 weeks postassault, 3 months postassault, and 6 months postassault). Index rape, prior rape and physical assault, and new rape and physical assault were classified by victims’ relationships to their perpetrat…
Development and Testing of a Contextually and Culturally Relevant Measure of Coping for use with Women Infected with HIV
In this article, we describe the development and initial testing of a contextually and culturally relevant measure of coping. The instrument was developed and tested during several stages of a longitudinal study of 264 women with HIV infection carried out in rural and urban areas of a southeastern state. During the development phase, qualitative descriptions of how the participants were coping with HIV disease were collected in the first of five …
Effects of sociodemographic factors, stage of illness, and perceived stigma on the identification of a support person among women with HIV infection
Addressing the lack of research on the social distribution of social support and research on the social experience of women with HIV infection, this article examines how sociodemographic factors, stage of illness, and perceived stigma affected the identification of a supportive social relationship among HIV‐infected women. Data were collected from women with HIV disease living in the state of Georgia. Logistic regression analysis indicates that a…
Resources, Stigma, and Patterns of Disclosure in Rural Women with HIV Infection
A growing number of cases of HIV infection are being diagnosed in rural communities especially among women. Although HIV‐specific education and care delivery programs have been focused on rural areas in recent years, limited data are available on the impact of such initiatives on the lives of women with HIV infection. The purpose of this study was to examine characteristics of women with HIV disease living in rural communities. The study used a c…
Quality of life in HIV-infected women in the south-eastern United States
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relative importance of social (social support, material resources, disclosure, and family functioning) and psychological factors (stigma, emotional distress, intrusion, avoidance, and fatalism) as predictors of the quality of life of women infected with HIV. The cross-sectional data were drawn from interviews of a sample of 264 women recruited from 8 HIV/AIDS treatment sites in a south-eastern state. …
Experiences of disclosure in women infected with HIV
In this qualitative focus group study, we explored issues of disclosure for women infected with HIV. The sample included 19 women who participated in one of four focus group sessions. Participants talked about and described their experiences sharing information about their HIV infection with others. Content analysis was used to code the data and identify major issues. Participants uniformly expressed concern about disclosing their HIV status beca…
Falling through the Cracks
To describe the range of social service concerns of women infected with HIV, we recruited 46 women to participate in one of eight focus groups. Transcripts from the focus groups were coded and their content was analyzed. The eight identified issues included the following: negative consequences of applying for a service, eligibility and red tape, fear of using services, concerns when services were used, the limits of some services, problems keepin…
Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Functions in the Outpatient Clinics of a Tertiary Care Center
Previous research has neglected to delineate pediatric nurse practitioner (PNP) roles in tertiary care settings (TCS). New PNP roles have developed as TCS seek cost-effective solutions to providing quality patient care and to meeting new demands for outpatient care. The authors evaluated the roles of 11 PNPs in eight specialty clinics in a large university TCS. Data were collected from various sources, including interviews, typical day informatio…
Moral and religious influences on the amniocentesis decision
