Religiosity as a moderator of causal uncertainty’s mediational role in the parental–offspring dysphoria relationship
Emotional Resilience in Young Adults Who Were Reared by Depressed Parents
Extending previous research, the present study assessed a broad array of religiousity/spirituality (R/S) factors in order to identify specific facets that might be especially protective against intergenerational transmission of depressive symptoms. Results from 273 young adults who were reared in families characterized by high levels of parental depressive affect found that depressive symptoms in offspring were only related to one of the five dim…
An Existential Model of Flourishing Subsequent to Treatment for Addiction
This study examined recovering alcoholics who were struggling to rebuild their lives 2 years after completing a professional treatment program for addiction. Sixty-eight British adults provided data describing whether or not their personal, interpersonal, and community (civic) functioning had improved from the period of maximum suffering before treatment to a point 2 years after being discharged. Results showed the magnitude of overall Quality of…
Physical Health Status in Relation to Self-Forgiveness and Other-Forgiveness in Healthy College Students
We extended prior research on the medical health-correlates of forgiving others by examining the relationship between self-forgiveness, other-forgiveness and health. Results derived from a cross-sectional survey of 266 healthy undergraduates showed that these dimensions of forgiveness were positively related to perceived physical health. Regression analysis revealed that self-forgiveness uniquely predicted a significant amount of variance in perc…
A Psychosocial Resilience Model to Account for Medical Well-being in Relation to Sense of Coherence
We tested the suggestion that Sense of Coherence (SOC) may enhance medical well-being by virtue of a favorably balanced profile of psychosocial assets relative to liabilities. Results derived from a sample of 81 young adults who responded to a battery of inventories supported the Psychosocial Resilience Model. Our findings provide preliminary evidence to suggest that a favorable balance between psychosocial 'protective' and 'risk' factors may, in…
Untreated young gamblers with game-specific problems
We assessed whether self-perceptions of dispositional personal luck are more pronounced among young gamblers who experience trouble with types of games that contain elements of skill relative to gamblers who have trouble with games characterized by pure chance. We also examined the convergence of subjective belief in personal luck and ecology of the game on attitudes toward seeking treatment. Our methodology consisted of a survey involving a samp…
Weight Loss and Biomedical Health Improvement on a Very Low Calorie Diet
In this study, the authors examined biomedical consequences of participation in a professionally delivered, multifaceted very low calorie diet (VLCD) program and whether the degree of benefit associated with treatment was moderated by history of weight cycling. The authors monitored body weight and biomedical health indicators in 66 severely obese outpatients on a VLCD liquid fast. Participants remained on the VLCD for a median of 55 (range 9 to …
Coping with Anger-Provoking Situations
This article examines how adolescents cope with different types of anger-provoking situations. Also explored is the degree to which coping changes or remains the same across different situations. Results showed that focusing-on-the-positive coping was negatively associated with anger reactivity in the face of both affiliation and achievement stress. In addition, individuals who engaged in wishful thinking coping in dealing with angerprovoking int…
