  • Classification Tree Analysis of Factors Associated with Oral Cancer Exam

Open Access•Sheng Ge, Hangwei Lu et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Health Behavior•2019

Objective: In this study, we performed a classification tree analysis (CTA) to identify population subgroups that are less likely to have an oral cancer examination (OCE). Methods: We conducted telephone surveys (N = 2401) of adults residing in north Florida to collect data on OCE status and potential OCE predictors including demographics, medical and dental experience, and psychosocial factors. The CTA algorithm exhaustive chi-square automatic i…

  • Dental Visits Mediate the Impact of Smoking on Oral Health

Open Access•Amber S Emanuel, Alice Parish et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Health Behavior•2018

Our findings suggest that, given the low success rate of quitting smoking, promoting dental visits can help limit the negative effects of smoking on oral health. Future community prevention studies could encourage dental visits among smokers and provide educational materials that aim to increase knowledge of oral self-care

  • The reliability of psychological instruments in community samples

    Open Access•James A Shepperd, Amber S Emanuel et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health Psychology•2016•Cited by: 7•References: 25

Although researchers norm and validate measures of psychological constructs largely on educated samples, they often use these instruments more broadly, assuming generalizability. We examined whether the assumption of generalizability is warranted. We administered three commonly used psychological measures-the Behavioral Activation/Behavioral Inhibition Scale, the Regulatory Focus Questionnaire, and the Need for Cognition Scale-to a community samp…

  • Evaluating Tablet Computers as a Survey Tool in Rural Communities

Open Access•Steve M Newell, Henrietta L Logan et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Rural Health•2015

PURPOSE: Although tablet computers offer advantages in data collection over traditional paper-and-pencil methods, little research has examined whether the 2 formats yield similar responses, especially with underserved populations. We compared the 2 survey formats and tested whether participants' responses to common health questionnaires or perceptions of usability differed by survey format. We also tested whether we could replicate established pa…

  • Determinants of First-Time Cancer Examinations in a Rural Community

Henrietta L Logan, Yi Guo et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2015•References: 37

Objectives. After conducting a media campaign focusing on the importance of oral and pharyngeal cancer (OPC) examinations, we assessed mechanisms of behavior change among individuals receiving an OPC examination for the first time. Methods. We used data from 2 waves of telephone surveys of individuals residing in 36 rural census tracts in northern Florida (n = 806). The second survey occurred after our media intervention. We developed media messa…

  • Health Literacy

Yi Guo, Henrietta L Logan et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2014•Cited by: 1•References: 47

Objectives. We examined whether health literacy was associated with self-rated oral health status and whether the relationship was mediated by patient–dentist communication and dental care patterns. Methods. We tested a path model with data collected from 2 waves of telephone surveys (baseline, 2009–2010; follow-up, 2011) of individuals residing in 36 rural census tracts in northern Florida (final sample size n = 1799). Results. Higher levels of …

  • Disparities in Knowledge of Mouth or Throat Cancer Among Rural Floridians

Open Access•Joseph L Riley, Elizabeth A Pomery et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Rural Health•2013

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine risk factors for reduced mouth or throat cancer (MTC) knowledge using a sample of rural North Floridian adults. METHODS: Telephone interviews were conducted across rural census tracts throughout North Florida in 2009-2010, using a survey adapted for cultural appropriateness. The sample consisted of 2,393 individuals (1,059 males and 1,334 females; 1,681 whites and 712 blacks). FINDINGS: Only 9% of t…

  • The burden of chronic diseases in a rural North Florida sample

Open Access•Henrietta L Logan, Henrietta Logan et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2013

The findings presented in this paper are derived from one of only a few studies examining patterns of chronic disease among residents of both a rural and lower income geographic region. Overall, the prevalence of these conditions compared to the state and nation as a whole is elevated and calls for increased attention and tailored public health interventions

  • The Decision to Counsel Adolescents about HPV

James A Shepperd, Jennifer L Howell et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Health Behavior•2013

Parent /public approval were primary barriers to HPV-counseling

  • Demographic and practice characteristics of M edicaid‐participating dentists

Open Access•Henrietta L Logan, Yi Guo et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•2013

If we are to address the shortage of Medicaid dental providers, increasing our understanding of how to capture the excess capacity among general dentists (the reported lack of busyness) in a way acceptable to dentists and to the State of Florida is an important first step. In addition, dental schools should consider implementing a track dedicated to training students for practice success within communities of highest dental need and to seek to in…

  • Developing an Oropharyngeal Cancer (OPC) Knowledge and Behaviors Survey

Virginia J Dodd, Joseph L Riley et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Health Behavior•2012

Community participation methodology provided a culturally appropriate survey instrument that demonstrated acceptable levels of reliability

  • Psychosocial Factors Associated With Mouth and Throat Cancer Examinations in Rural Florida

Joseph L Riley, Virginia J Dodd et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2012•Cited by: 3•References: 58

Objectives. We examined the knowledge and prevalence of mouth and throat cancer examinations in a sample drawn from rural populations in north Florida. Methods. Telephone interviews were conducted across rural census tracts throughout north Florida in 2009 and 2010, in a survey that had been adapted for cultural appropriateness using cognitive interviews. The sample consisted of 2526 respondents (1132 men and 1394 women; 1797 Whites and 729 Afric…

  • Trends in incidence of oral and pharyngeal carcinoma in Florida

Open Access•Susan P McGorray, Yi Guo et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•2011

This study supports the finding of increasing incidence of SCC of the tonsil and base of tongue in males, in contrast to decreasing trends for most oral and pharyngeal carcinomas. However, we observed that this increase occurred in white males only and the most dramatic increase occurred in the 45-64 age group

  • The influence of active coping and perceived stress on health disparities in a multi-ethnic low income sample

    Open Access•Jennifer M Watson, Henrietta L Logan et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2008

Our results indicate that perceived stress is a critical component in understanding health outcomes for all ethnoracial groups. While SES related significantly to general health for Whites and Hispanics, this relationship was mediated by perceived stress. Active coping was associated only with oral health

  • Effects of Age on Responsiveness to Adjunct Hypnotic Analgesia During Invasive Medical Procedures

    Susan K Lutgendorf, Elvira V Lang et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•2007

OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of age on responsiveness to self-hypnotic relaxation as an analgesic adjunct in patients undergoing invasive medical procedures. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Secondary data analysis from a prospective trial with 241 patients randomized to receive hypnosis, attention, and standard care treatment during interventional radiological procedures. Growth curve analyses, hierarchical linear regressions, and logistic regressions…

  • Florida Adults' Oral Cancer Knowledge and Examination Experiences

    Open Access•Scott L Tomar, Henrietta L Logan•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•2005

There is widespread lack of awareness and knowledge in Florida regarding oral cancer and low levels of reported examination, particularly among groups experiencing disproportionately high incidence and late stage diagnosis. Increasing awareness of this disease and promoting primary and secondary prevention may help lessen the disease burden in Florida and reduce racial disparities in its outcomes

  • Pain and Immunologic Response to Root Canal Treatment and Subsequent Health Outcomes

    Henrietta L Logan, Susan K Lutgendorf et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•2001

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the effects of pain and stress associated with a dental procedure, root canal treatment (RCT), on natural killer cell cytotoxicity (NKCC) and the subsequent development of symptoms of upper respiratory illness during the following month. METHODS: Patients (N = 33) were recruited from those scheduled for RCT appointments. Subjects for a non-RCT comparison group (N = 14) were also recruited from dental clinic patients…

  • Effects of Relaxation and Stress on the Capsaicin-Induced Local Inflammatory Response

Susan K Lutgendorf, Susan Lutgendorf et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•2000

OBJECTIVE: Although stress is known to modulate the inflammatory response, there has been little experimental examination of the effects of stress and stress reduction on inflammation in humans. In particular, the effects of stress and relaxation on neurogenic inflammation have been minimally studied. This study examines the effects of three experimental manipulations: mental stress, relaxation, and control on the local inflammatory response evok…

  • Sensory Focus as Therapeutic Treatments for Acute Pain

    Henrietta L Logan, Robert S Baron et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1995

This study examined the hypothesis that instructing patients to focus on their sensations (sensory focus) during root canal therapy reduces painful response. Before dental treatment, patients were randomly assigned to one of four audiotaped conditions: sensory focus with and without procedural information, procedural information, or no-intervention. Patients were categorized as to how much control they desired and felt. The "high desire for contr…

  • Differences in Judgments of Persuasive Argument Quality by Three Population Groups in Iowa

    Open Access•Aljernon J Bolden, Henrietta L Logan•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•1995

Results of this study suggest that one way to improve persuasive public health preventive messages is to consider whether the fundamental arguments on which preventive health campaigns are built have broad patient appeal

  • Desire for control, felt control, and stress inoculation training during dental treatment

Alan Law, Henrietta L Logan et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•1994•Cited by: 1

Coping style research has typically assessed subjects' desire for a coping resource, but ignored whether subjects possess that resource. In this study 110 dental patients were categorized as to their desire for and feelings of control and were randomly assigned, just prior to dental treatment, to a 20-minute Stress Inoculation Training (SIT) session or a Filler condition. SIT significantly reduced pain and increased control only for patients who …
