  • Associations of Germline Genetic Variants With Depression and Fatigue Among Hematologic Cancer Patients Treated With Allogeneic Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation

    Aasha I Hoogland, Brian D Gonzalez et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•2023

OBJECTIVE: Depression and fatigue are common among cancer patients and are associated with germline genetic variation. The goal of this pilot study was to examine genetic associations with depression and fatigue in the year after allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplant (HCT). METHODS: Blood was collected from patients and their donors before HCT. Patients completed self-report measures of depression and fatigue before HCT (T1), 90 days post-HCT …

  • Impact of the Covid‐19 pandemic on rural and urban cancer patients' experiences, health behaviors, and perceptions

Open Access•Anita R Peoples, Laura B Oswald et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Rural Health•2022

PURPOSE: The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted many facets of life. We evaluated pandemic-related health care experiences, COVID-19 prevention behaviors and measures, health behaviors, and psychosocial outcomes among rural and urban cancer patients. METHODS: Among 1,472 adult cancer patients, who visited Huntsman Cancer Institute in the past 4 years and completed a COVID-19 survey (August-September 2020), we assessed the impact of the pandemic on m…

  • Effectiveness of three brief treatments for recent traumatic events in a low-SES community setting

Open Access•Gail Ironson, Emily Hylton et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Trauma Theory…•2020

This study provides preliminary evidence that any of these 3 approaches may be useful in low-resource community settings. Because it gives the quickest relief, EMDR is the preferred approach, followed by SMT, due its ease of administration. PFA provides a reasonable alternative. Where possible, booster sessions should be planned. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2020 APA, all rights reserved)

  • Impact of stressful death or divorce in people with HIV

    Open Access•Gail Ironson, Sarah M Henry et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health Psychology•2020•References: 47

This study examined the impact of a stressful death/divorce on psychological and immune outcomes in people with HIV. People with HIV with stressful death/divorce were examined from before the event to up to 12 months later ( n = 45); controls were assessed at similar intervals ( n = 112). Stressful deaths/divorces were associated with increased viral load and anxiety over time ( ps ≤ .014), but not CD4+ or depression. Increased use of religious c…

  • Coping strategies modify risk of depression associated with hematopoietic cell transplant symptomatology

    Open Access•Anna Barata, Brian D Gonzalez et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health Psychology•2018•Cited by: 3•References: 36

To determine whether coping strategies modify the risk of depression among allogeneic recipients experiencing post-transplant-related symptomatology, 105 participants (mean age = 52 years, 42% female) completed questionnaires 90 days post-transplant. A total of 28 percent reported depressive symptoms. Univariate correlations indicated that depression was associated with greater transplant-related symptomatology and avoidance, acceptance/resignati…
