Modifiable risk factors for hypertensive disorders in pregnancy
Hypertensive disorders in pregnancy (HDPs) are the leading causes of maternal mortality and morbidity. This study explored whether micronutrient intake and psychological distress were associated with HDPs. Micronutrients include folate and vitamin B12. Psychological distress refers to perceived stress, prenatal distress, and prenatal depression. HDPs were defined as systolic blood pressure (BP) ≥ 130 mmHg or diastolic BP ≥ 80 mmHg. Data were coll…
Factors associated with micronutrient intake of low-income overweight or obese young mothers
We examined the proportion of the low-income overweight or obese mothers meeting micronutrient recommendations, and whether race, education and body mass index category (BMIc) were associated with micronutrient intake. This analysis included 198 women who completed a validated food frequency questionnaire. Micronutrients were grouped: antioxidant (vitamins A, C, and E, as well as copper, selenium, and zinc), methylation (vitamins B2, B3, B6, B9, …
Perceived stress linking psychosocial factors and depressive symptoms in low-income mothers
Clinical Trials NCT01839708 ; registered February 28, 2013
Mediators affecting the association between a lifestyle behavior intervention and stress in low-income overweight or obese mothers of young children
Using data from a community-based lifestyle behavioral intervention study, this secondary data analysis investigated whether emotional coping, coping self-efficacy, and autonomous motivation mediated the association between the intervention and perceived stress in low-income overweight or obese mothers of young children. Results showed that coping self-efficacy significantly mediated the association between the intervention and perceived stress. …

Participant recruitment and retention in a pilot program to prevent weight gain in low-income overweight and obese mothers
Current Controlled Trials NCT00944060
Scale Development
The theory-based FADESM scales have documented good validity and reliability for measuring factors affecting dietary fat intake behavior, physical activity, and stress management in low-income women. Results of this study support the use of these scales with low-income African American and white mothers in community settings
