  • Comparison of Daily and Retrospective Reports of Vaginal Sex in Heterosexual Men and Women

Mary Rogers Gillmore, Barbara C Leigh et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sex Research•2009•Cited by: 8•References: 4

This study examined the agreement between daily and retrospective reports of vaginal sex over a two-month period in a sample of 376 heterosexually active men and women. We also examined whether gender, age, or method of daily data collection (self-administered vs. interviewer administered) were related to agreement between daily and retrospective reports. Both counts and categorical measures of frequency of the behaviors were examined. There were…

  • The Opposite of Sex? Adolescents’ Thoughts About Abstinence and Sex, and Their Sexual Behavior

Open Access•N Tatiana Masters, Blair Beadnell et al.•ARTICLE•Perspectives on Sexual and…•2008•References: 6

Youth do not consider abstinence and sexual activity opposing constructs, and solely instilling positive abstinence attitudes and intentions in youth may not have robust effects in preventing sexual activity

  • Marriage Following Adolescent Parenthood

Open Access•Mary Rogers Gillmore, Jungeun Lee et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Marriage and the Family•2008•Cited by: 1•References: 20

Research suggests that adult marriages confer benefits. Does marriage following a teenage birth confer benefits similar to those observed for adults? Longitudinal data from a community sample of 235 young women who gave birth as unmarried adolescents were used to examine this question. Controlling for socioeconomic status and preexisting "benefits," we found that marriage conferred small, though statistically significant, benefits with regard to …

Objective: Six items were administered to a multiethnic sample of 435 middle school—age participants in a group-delivered safer sex intervention to determine their reliability and validity. Method: Exploratory analyses were followed by confirmatory factor analyses, and then correlations of scale scores with theoretically related variables were computed. Results: Findings favored a unidimensional scale with high internal consistency (with as few a…

  • Are multiracial adolescents at greater risk? Comparisons of rates, patterns, and correlates of substance use and violence between monoracial and multiracial adolescents

Yoonsun Choi, Tracy W Harachi et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Orthopsychiatry•2006•References: 36

Rates and patterns of substance use and violent behaviors among multiracial adolescents were examined and compared with 3 monoracial groups, European, African, and Asian Americans. The relationships between ethnic identity and the subjective experience of racial discrimination, substance use, and violent behavior were also examined. The authors found multiracial adolescents reporting higher rates of problem behaviors. Several significant relation…

    Open Access•Monica L Oxford, Lewayne D Gilchrist et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Research on Adolescence•2005•Cited by: 13•References: 11

Longitudinal data were used to examine pathways taken by 227 adolescent mothers during the transition from adolescence into adulthood. Latent profile analysis identified three sub‐groups of adolescent mothers from 6 months to 6 years postpartum: a problem‐prone profile (15%), a psychologically vulnerable profile (42%), and a normative profile (43%). Group membership was related to long‐term adult outcomes (adult status markers, health‐risk and de…

  • Applicability of the Social Development Model to Urban Ethnic Minority Youth

Open Access•Yoonsun Choi, Tracy W Harachi et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Research on Adolescence•2005•Cited by: 12•References: 9

The development of preventive interventions targeting adolescent problem behaviors requires a thorough understanding of risk and protective factors for such behaviors. However, few studies examine whether different cultural and ethnic groups share these factors. This study is an attempt to fill a gap in research by examining similarities and differences in risk factors across racial and ethnic groups. The social development model has shown promis…

  • Analysis with Missing Data in Social Work Research

Yoonsun Choi, Seana Golder et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Service Research•2005•Cited by: 4•References: 11

Missing data occur in virtually all research. Traditional methods for handling missing data, like complete case analyses and mean substitution, can result in the loss of statistical power and biased estimates of parameters. Recent statistical and software developments have provided readily accessible methods of handling missing data that provide more statistical power and less biased estimates than in the past. This paper compares newer technique…

  • Condom use, frequency of sex, and number of partners

Blair Beadnell, Diane M Morrison et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sex Research•2005•Cited by: 30•References: 3

Sexual health research often relies on single risk indicators. However multi-variable composites may better capture the underlying construct of risk-taking. Latent Profile Analysis identified subgroups based on condom use consistency, partner numbers, and sex frequency among 605 adolescents. Three profiles were identified for each of grades 8 to 10 (Condom Users, Few Partners, and Risk-Takers) and 4 in grades 11 and 12 (Condom Users, One Partner …

Open Access•Mary Rogers Gillmore, Matthew E Archibald et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Marriage and the Family•2002•Cited by: 14•References: 38

We examined the utility of the theory of reasoned action for predicting sexual intercourse among teenagers and determined whether it holds for both genders and for those with and without prior sexual experience. The data include 749 students who were in 9th-11th grades when the predictors were measured and in 10th-12th grades when sexual intercourse was assessed. About half (53%) were girls, about half (48%) were non-Hispanic European Americans. …

This study examines associations between psychological distress and alcohol and drug use across the first five years of raising a child and parenting quality at child age six for 185 adolescent mothers. Overall, alcohol and other drug use in this sample was relatively low, but drug use was associated with more mother-reported unrealistic expectations of child behavior and more attributions of child intent to annoy parent by misbehaving. Maternal …

This paper compares three methods for daily data collection to examine the co‐occurrence of intoxication and unsafe sex at the incident level. Sexually transmitted disease clinic clients and sexually active college students were randomized to complete either written daily diaries, daily telephone interviews they initiated, or daily telephone interviews initiated by project staff, for a period of 4 weeks. The three methods are compared on rates of…

Diane M Morrison, Michael S Spencer et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Research on Adolescence•1998•Cited by: 2•References: 4

Although substance use among pregnant and parenting adolescents has serious health implications for both mother and infant, few studies have investigated the predictors of such behavior. The present study, based on the Theory of Reasoned Action, tracked substance use behavior, intentions, attitudes, perceived social norms, and beliefs from pregnancy to 12 months postpartum in a cohort of 255 US adolescents (mean age, 16 years). Documented was a p…

Understanding problem behavior among adolescent mothers is critical, as their behaviors affect not only their own lives but the lives of their children. Using confirmatory factor analysis with an ethnically diverse sample of 233 pregnant adolescents, we test a hypothesis derived from problem behavior theory that diverse problem behaviors are manifestations of a single underlying construct Three measurement models of problem behaviors are compared…

This paper presents a theoretical analysis of the structural determinants of power in exchange networks, along with research findings from laboratory experiments and a computer simulation of bargaining in network structures. Two theoretical traditions are dealth with: (1) point centrality in graph-theoretic representations of structure, as an approach to power distributions; and (2) power dependence principles applied to exchange networks. However, the nature of the association remains unclear. In this study we examined the relationship of condom use with substance use in adults with other sex partners (N = 508) who were seeking services in an STD clinic, engaged in high levels of risky sexual behaviors, and also engaged in high levels of…
