Famine politics in Maoist China and the Soviet Union
This important book sheds new light on the background and circumstances of the devastating Soviet and Chinese famines that took millions of lives in the Soviet Union (SU) in the early 1930s and dur

Mao's Forgotten Successor
China Learns from the Soviet Union, 1949–Present
It is well known that the Soviet Union strongly influenced China in the early 1950s, since China committed itself both to the Sino-Soviet alliance and to the Soviet model of building socialism. What is less well known is that Chinese proved receptive not only to the Soviet economic model but also to the emulation of the Soviet Union in realms such as those of ideology, education, science, and culture. In this book an international group of schola…

The Transformation of Chinese Socialism . Lin Chun
Mao Zedong and the Famine of 1959–1960
In late autumn 1958, Mao Zedong strongly condemned widespread practices of the Great Leap Forward (GLF) such as subjecting peasants to exhausting labour without adequate food and rest, which had resulted in epidemics, starvation and deaths. At that time Mao explicitly recognized that anti-rightist pressures on officialdom were a major cause of “production at the expense of livelihood.” While he was not willing to acknowledge that only abandonment…

The impact of elections on the village structure of power
Village committee elections are one of the major innovations of the reform era. Electoral processes have elicited much scholarly and public attention. Less attention has been devoted to studying the impact of this innovation on the relations between the elected village committee chair persons and the appointed Party secretaries. This article shows that conflicts can arise between the two because the basis of their legitimacy and authority differs…
Taxation without Representation in Contemporary Rural China
The financial burden imposed upon the Chinese farmer by local taxes has become a major source of discontent in the Chinese countryside and a worrisome source of political and social instability for the Chinese government. Bernstein and Lü examine the forms and sources of heavy, informal taxation, and shed light on how peasants defend their interests by adopting strategies of collective resistance (both peaceful and violent). Bernstein and Lü also…
Taxation without Representation
China's countryside has undergone tremendous changes in the last two decades, but the changes and the benefits that came with them were not distributed evenly. Rapid rural industrialization in the Eastern, coastal provinces under the aegis of the local developmental state dramatically improved the lives of villagers. In contrast, township and village enterprises (TVEs) and incomes grew much more slowly in the Central belt of provinces and still m…

Leadership and Mass Mobilisation in the Soviet and Chinese Collectivisation Campaigns of 1929–30 and 1955–56 A Comparison
The Soviet collectivisation campaign of 1929–30 and the Chinese campaign of 1955–56 were similar in that both turned out to be attempts at achieving nationwide breakthroughs in agriculture. Both régimes attempted in the course of about six months to make the radical transition from small-producer to collectivised agriculture. The plans and forecasts that had been formulated by both the Soviet and the Chinese leaders had not called for such a brea…
