Real-Time Evaluation of Craving, Withdrawal, and Respiratory Symptoms Among Adolescents and Young Adults Who Use e-Cigarettes
BACKGROUND: A growing body of work has identified short-term harms of e-cigarette use that may be indicative of long-term harm. Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) is a methodology that can contribute to these efforts, as it lends itself to capturing moment-to-moment changes in symptoms as people go about their natural environments. This study leveraged EMA to assess the correspondence between instances of e-cigarette use and changes in self-re…
Indirect Effects of Body Mass Index and Sweet Taste Responsiveness on E-Cigarette Dependence
Background: Recent research has shown obesity to be associated with e-cigarette use and appeal, but models have yet to examine how weight status may be related to e-cigarette dependence among e-cigarette users. Objectives: To increase our understanding of pathways from body mass index (BMI) to e-cigarette dependence, the present cross-sectional observational study investigated a model in which BMI, sweet taste responsiveness, and the interaction …
Eating Disorder Symptomatology Among Young Adult Cigarette and E-Cigarette Users
Objective: Tobacco use is elevated among individuals with eating disorders (EDs). Yet, further research is needed to understand associations between cigarette and e-cigarette use patterns and ED symptomatology. To gain a more comprehensive understanding of tobacco use and EDs, this study characterized ED symptomatology and tobacco use patterns, including exclusive cigarette use, e-cigarette use, dual use, and nonuse. Method: Young adults aged 18-…
Factors Associated With Successful E-Cigarette Cessation Among a Convenience Sample of Adult Users
Background: A growing body of literature suggests that many people who use e-cigarettes become dependent and have difficulty quitting. Most people who use e-cigarettes have interest in quitting, yet there is currently a lack of evidence to inform interventions for e-cigarette cessation. Objective: The purpose of this study was to identify factors associated with successful e-cigarette quit attempts among a large sample of people who use e-cigaret…
Effects of exposure to snus marketing with versus without modified risk tobacco product claims on snus use intention and perceived harm among young adults
Although some young adults who vape or smoke may have snus use intentions, snus MRTP claims might not affect young adults' snus use intentions, regardless of whether they vape/smoke. MRTP claims might modestly increase the accuracy of perceived harms of snus relative to cigarettes while also slightly causing unsubstantiated perceptions of lower harm than e-cigarettes
Oral nicotine pouch manufacturer’s reduced exposure claims require evidence and regulatory oversight
E-Cigarette Quit Attempts and Experiences in a Convenience Sample of Adult Users
Most e-cigarette users report planning to quit, but there is a paucity of evidence-based interventions for e-cigarette cessation. In the absence of interventions for e-cigarette cessation, we sought to understand how and why e-cigarette users attempt to quit on their own. Participants were recruited from Amazon Mechanical Turk, an online crowdsourcing platform. Those who reported they had ever used e-cigarettes regularly and had attempted to quit…
Effects of ‘Ice’ flavoured e-cigarettes with synthetic cooling agent WS-23 or menthol on user-reported appeal and sensory attributes
Adding synthetic coolant WS-23 to e-cigarettes appears to make the vaping user experience more appealing, regardless of characterising base flavour. Regulatory agencies should be aware that the manufacturing process of adding synthetic coolants may increase the attractiveness of various e-cigarette products.Cite Now
Dose–response effects of two nicotine salt formulations on electronic cigarette appeal and sensory attributes
This study was registered under ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT03742817 under the title 'Effects of e-Cigarettes on Perceptions and Behavior
Effects of flavour and modified risk claims on nicotine pouch perceptions and use intentions among young adults who use inhalable nicotine and tobacco products
Flavoured (vs smooth) pouches were more appealing to YAs. MRTP claims reduced perceived harm of pouches compared with cigarettes; however, intentions to switch were low. To protect YAs' health, regulatory restrictions could target flavours and MRTP claims
What do young people know about the nicotine in their e-cigarettes
These findings indicate the generally limited awareness about nicotine among youth who used e-cigarettes. Improvements in health communications and requirements for e-cigarette industry disclosures are necessary to ensure that consumers are better informed about the dimensions-and the risks-of the nicotine they are consuming
Prospective Associations of Tobacco Weight Control Beliefs with E-Cigarette Use Patterns in the Path Study
INTRODUCTION: Some adolescents report using e-cigarettes (EC) for weight-related reasons, but longitudinal studies are lacking. This study examined associations between tobacco weight control beliefs and body mass index (BMI) with EC use patterns over one year. METHODS: Data from Waves 1 and 2 (September 2013 to October 2015) of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) study were used. Questions about tobacco weight control beliefs,…
Differences in Young Adults’ Perceptions of and Willingness to Use Nicotine Pouches by Tobacco Use Status
Oral nicotine pouches may appeal to young adult current nicotine/tobacco users interested in alternative forms of nicotine that lack pulmonary exposure, but may also appeal to young adult non-users of nicotine/tobacco products. We used data from a 2020 remote digital survey of an ongoing cohort study of young adults from Southern California (aged 19-23) to examine differences in pouch perceptions and use willingness across nicotine/tobacco use st…
Cross-Sectional Associations of Multiple Tobacco Product Use with Depressive and Anxiety Symptoms among Young Adult E-Cigarette Users
Background Tobacco users with mental health conditions are a vulnerable population in tobacco research, yet few studies have evaluated the association of depressive and anxiety symptoms with multiple tobacco product (MTP) use among young adult electronic cigarette (ENDS) users. Methods Cross-sectional survey data on U.S. young adult past 30-day ENDS users (N = 2348) were collected via Amazon MTurk from May-July 2019. Binary logistic regressions ev…
Effects of Negative Emotion on Abstinence Induced Change in Urge to Vape and Measures of Vaping Dependence
Introduction Negative emotion and craving to smoke are established factors driving the maintenance of combustible cigarette use and dependence. The current study aimed to examine whether these findings extend to e-cigarette use. Toward that aim, change in vaping urge following abstinence was examined as a function of negative emotion. Additionally, a mediation model which previously demonstrated relationships between negative emotion, craving, an…
Pregnant Smokers’ Intention to Switch From Cigarettes to E-Cigarettes
Harm Perceptions of the Juul E-Cigarette in a Sample of Ever Users
Increased frequency of JUUL use was associated with decreased harm perceptions. JUUL was associated with reduced perceptions of absolute harm compared to most other tobacco products, except other ECs. Public health practitioners should develop public health interventions that increase harm perceptions of ECs
Have combustible cigarettes met their match? The nicotine delivery profiles and harmful constituent exposures of second-generation and third-generation electronic cigarette users
Under normal use conditions, both G2 and G3 devices deliver cigarette-like amounts of nicotine, but G3 devices matched the amount and speed of nicotine delivery of a conventional cigarette. Compared with cigarettes, G2 and G3 e-cigarettes resulted in significantly lower levels of exposure to a potent lung carcinogen and cardiovascular toxicant. These findings have significant implications for understanding the addiction potential of these devices…
Caregivers' interest in using smokeless tobacco products
The study examined caregivers' interest in using potentially reduced exposure tobacco products for smoking cessation, reduction, and to help them not smoke in places such as around their child, as all three methods would potentially lead to reduced secondhand smoke exposure for their children. A sample of 136 caregivers completed carbon monoxide testing to assess smoking status and a brief survey. Few caregivers had ever used potentially reduced …
