Food security in a time of climate–food–water–energy convergence
Critical hydrologic impacts from climate change: Addressing an urgent global need
Emerging threats from climate change on our oceans demand proactive action
Resilience of People and Ecosystems under Climate Stress
This volume is based on a new initiative by the Pontifical Academy of Sciences to bring researchers, policy makers and faith leaders together to understand the scientific and societal challenges of climate change, and develop solutions for enabling resilient people and resilient ecosystems. The research presented in this volume leads to the recommendation that we can no longer take comfort in just relying on climate mitigation. Adaptation to curr…
Stimulating Innovations for Sustainable Agricultural Practices among Smallholder Farmers: Persistence of Intervention Matters
As part of the dissemination of sustainable intensification (SI) of agricultural practices in northern Ghana, farmers were conditionally induced with inputs to adopt the SI practices. We study the effects of the conditional inducement on maize yield and net income of farmers under a quasi-randomised phase-out design. We examine the effects of the inducement by comparing continuous induced farmers with past induced and non-induced farmers. Our res…
AI, Robotics, and Humanity: Opportunities, Risks, and Implications for Ethics and Policy
This introduction to the volume gives an overview of foundational issues in AI and robotics, looking into AI’s computational basis, brain–AI comparisons, and conflicting positions on AI and consciousness. AI and robotics are changing the future of society in areas such as work, education, industry, farming, and mobility, as well as services like banking. Another important concern addressed in this volume are the impacts of AI and robotics on poor…
Robotics, AI, and Humanity: Science, Ethics, and Policy
This book on artificial intelligence covers multidisciplinary research, examines current research frontiers in AI/robotics, and likely impacts on societal well-being, human-robot relationships, as well as the opportunities and risks for sustainable development and peace

The global cost of reaching a world without hunger: Investment costs and policy action opportunities
This study developed a marginal abatement cost curve to identify a mix of least-cost investment options with the highest potential for hunger reduction, hunger here defined by the undernourishment concept of the Food and Agriculture Organization. Twenty-two different interventions are considered for reducing undernourishment relying on information drawn from best available evidence-based literature, including model- and large-scale intervention s…
Conflict exposure and food consumption pathways during and after conflict: Evidence from Northern Uganda
We examine the consequences of conflict exposure on food consumption and consumption pathways three and six years after the cessation of hostilities of the Lord Resistance Army insurgency in Northern Uganda. We use the correlated random effects model and fractional multinomial response model with nationally representative panel data collected during and after the cessation of hostilities. The uniqueness of this study is in using three related con…
Impact of voluntary community-based health insurance on child stunting: Evidence from rural Uganda
The Impact of Drinking Water Quality and Sanitation on Child Health: Evidence from Rural Ethiopia
This paper examines the association between stored drinking water quality and sanitation on diarrhoea incidence among under-five children in Ethiopia. Using primary household survey data and microbiological water quality testing for Escherichia coli, our results show that uncontaminated stored drinking water and safe child stool disposal are associated with decreased child diarrhoea incidences of 18 and 20 percentage points, respectively. In cont…
The development of bioeconomy of the Baltic Region in the context of regional and global climate change
Climate change is projected to have a profound effect on natural ecosystems, biodiversity, and societies both in the Baltic region and globally, particularly so through agriculture and food systems. The Baltic region has a vast potential for the development of bioeconomy due to the existing opportunities for biomass production and advances in microbiology leading to process- and product innovations in biomass production and utilization. The devel…
Governance of the Bioeconomy: A Global Comparative Study of National Bioeconomy Strategies
More than forty states worldwide currently pursue explicit political strategies to expand and promote their bioeconomies. This paper assesses these strategies in the context of the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Our theoretical framework differentiates between four pathways of bioeconomic developments. The extent to which bioeconomic developments along these pathways lead to increased sustainability depends on the creation of effect…

Identifying technology innovations for marginalized smallholders-A conceptual approach
This paper adds a contribution in the existing literature in terms of theoretical and conceptual background for the identification of idle potentials of marginal rural areas and people by means of technological and institutional innovations. The approach follows ex-ante assessment for identifying suitable technology and institutional innovations for marginalized smallholders in marginal areas-divided into three main parts (mapping, surveying and …

Marginality: Addressing the Nexus of Poverty, Exclusion and Ecology
This book takes a new approach on understanding causes of extreme poverty and promising actions to address it. Its focus is on marginality being a root cause of poverty and deprivation. “Marginality”
Climate Change Impacts on Global Food Security
Climate change could potentially interrupt progress toward a world without hunger. A robust and coherent global pattern is discernible of the impacts of climate change on crop productivity that could have consequences for food availability. The stability of whole food systems may be at risk under climate change because of short-term variability in supply. However, the potential impact is less clear at regional scales, but it is likely that climat…
Drivers and triggers of international food price spikes and volatility
The objective of this study is to explore empirical evidence on the quantitative importance of supply, demand, and market shocks for price changes in international food commodity markets. To this end, it distinguishes between root, conditional, and internal drivers of price changes using three empirical models: (1) a price spike model where monthly food price returns (spikes) are estimated against oil prices, supply and demand shocks, and excessi…
Information to guide policy responses to higher global food prices: The data and analyses required
The poorest and hungry: Assessments, analyses, and actions: An IFPRI 2020 book.
Although many millions of people have exited poverty in recent decades, much of the reduction in poverty has benefited people living close to the poverty line rather than those at the very bottom of the income distribution. This book is not focused on poverty per se but rather is focused on looking particularly at those most deprived in society. It is this focus on the poorest and hungry people that is the major contribution of this volume. Relat…

Is Consumption Insured against Illness? Evidence on Vulnerability of Households to Health Shocks in Rural Ethiopia
Low and volatile incomes and absence of well‐developed financial markets make consumption smoothing an important issue in low‐income countries. Based on the theory of full insurance and using 2 years of panel data, this study examines the impact of illness on the consumption of rural households and the capacity of existing risk‐sharing mechanisms in insuring consumption against health shocks in the rural areas of Ethiopia. The results show that i…

Some preliminary considerations on the present state of Baltic musicology
Contemporary musicology, as our age in general, is lacerated by innumerable virtues and ills of scholarly, ethical, philosophical, ideological, political, and even timeserving natures.1 A most bizarre orchestra seems to be performing the musicological world symphony, where, to use Leo Treitler's words, rattling of skeletons in the halls of human learning2 blends with a George-Kneplertype approach: tfcour aim is the improvement of our (i.e. East G…

Famine as the Outcome of Political Production and Market Failures
Famines are not explainable as short-term crisis events; they are more a function of long-term trends resulting from a failure of policy to deal appropriately with demographic, environmental, productivity, and political pressures, all of which make segments of society and regions highly vulnerable to exogenous shocks. Optimal strategies for famine prevention must, therefore, build on a recognition that institutions and their policies play a key r…

Famine in Africa: Causes, Responses, and Prevention
Though famine has affected many parts of the world in the twentieth century, the conditions that produce famine—extreme poverty, armed conflict, economic and political turmoil, and climate shocks—are now most prevalent in Africa. Researchers differ on how to address this problem effectively, but their arguments are often not informed by empirical analysis from a famine context. Broadening current theories and models of development for conquering …
